Brock Purdy's statistics from last Thursday night's game against the New York Giants don't paint the whole picture. Yes, Purdy threw for a career-high 310 yards, but the Giants defense was getting pressure on the San Francisco 49ers' second-year quarterback.
That didn't phase Purdy, though. He wasn't rattled. And that is just one of many traits that has one NFL analyst impressed with the 23-year-old.
"Obviously, the best that ever did it right there, Joe Montana, he had that. You couldn't rattle him," Brian Baldinger said Tuesday morning on 95.7 The Game's "The Morning Roast" show. "I'm not comparing him to Joe Montana. I'm not doing anything like that, but he does have that composure. He does have that poise."
Some passes have come close, but opposing defenses haven't been able to come away this season with a Purdy-thrown football. The 49ers quarterback is
one of four starting quarterbacks that haven't thrown an interception this season. The others are Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers, Joshua Dobbs of the Arizona Cardinals, and C.J. Stroud of the Houston Texans.
Purdy has thrown for 736 yards and four touchdowns through three games, putting him
on pace for 4,170 passing yards.
"He's outstanding," Baldinger said. "At the quarterback position ... it's about three things. ... It's about speed of decision-making because everything gets speeded up. When [Giants defensive coordinator Don] Martindale dials up a Zero Blitz and you've got a free hitter coming right at you, you don't have time to think about it. You hit [WR]
Ronnie Bell on a perfect throw for a touchdown.
"So it's speed of decision making. It's how many great plays you make, which you don't have to make a ton of them, especially with all the players they have around him. And then it's about mistakes and limiting mistakes. But limiting mistakes [while] still staying aggressive.
"You can eliminate mistakes and throw the ball in the stands. So what? You're not making anything happen. Like, this guy's making things happen without making mistakes. It's three games now. He doesn't have a turnover. He hasn't thrown an interception in seven straight games.
"I see some of the stuff that people say. 'I'm not wowed by him. He's not great.' I don't know. I see all the little things, the ball handling. ... Like he's constantly parrying punches in the pocket, and it's a great skill."

Why Baldy sees 49ers QB Brock Purdy as a legitimate MVP candidate
NFL analyst Brian Baldinger asserts that Brock Purdy is a legitimate contender for the NFL MVP award. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback has been playing at an elite level, leading the league in several statistical categories, including completion percentage (70.2), touchdown percentage (6.9), yards per attempt (9.6), yards gained per completion (13.7), and passer rating (116.1).
"If Brock Purdy keeps playing like this, I think Brock Purdy is the MVP," Baldinger said Tuesday morning on 95.7 The Game's "The Morning Roast" show.
While acknowledging that the 49ers are a perfect fit for Purdy, Baldinger dismisses the notion that San Francisco's talented roster and head coach Kyle Shanahan's system are solely responsible for Purdy's success.
"Honestly,
49ers 'not surprised anymore' by Brock Purdy's MVP-like performances
Last season, it was probably easy to look at Brock Purdy's early starts and be shocked by the rookie quarterback's ability to step in and play like a veteran. Then, as he turned in impressive performance after impressive performance, his San Francisco 49ers teammates became less surprised. Everyone was forced to acknowledge that Purdy could play in the NFL and do so at a high level.
As the last overall pick in the draft, a player passed on multiple times by every team, including the 49ers, Purdy has defied expectations.
Purdy entered this season as the starting quarterback despite coming off surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) he suffered in the NFC Championship Game. The 49ers quarterback has been playing at an elite level this season,
Omar Ruiz talks Brock Purdy respect, 49ers-Eagles showdown
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has showcased elite-level performances this season. Nevertheless, some seem reluctant to give the second-year player the respect that many 49ers fans believe he deserves.
NFL Network reporter Omar Ruiz joined KNBR on Monday morning and was asked if he senses a reluctance among the media to categorize Purdy among the upper echelon of NFL quarterbacks.
"Yeah, and I think as long as he has a loaded Forty-Niner team around him, it'll probably always be like that unless he wins a Super Bowl," Ruiz responded on the "Murph and Mac" show.
Ruiz drew parallels to former Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson's journey to being considered among the league's best. Initially, the team's outstanding defensive play
49ers Notebook: Deebo Samuel backs up the smack; Brock Purdy returns to scene of injury; Jauan Jennings beats his favorite team
It's not often that a player can back up copious amounts of trash talk the way Deebo Samuel did against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, but that's exactly what happened during the critical beatdown the 49ers unleashed on the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.
Samuel was among multiple 49ers players who expressed confidence over the offseason that the result in last season's NFC Championship game, won 31-7 by the Eagles, would have been different had quarterback Brock Purdy not suffered a season-ending elbow injury during the contest. No one was more vocal on that front than Samuel, who said things like "We lost because we played with ten people" while adding that the
