All offseason, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed confidence in fourth-year defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw despite the team not exercising the player's fifth-year option. It was certainly more confidence than fans had in the former first-round draft pick.

Kinlaw had missed 24 games over the past two seasons. He underwent reconstructive knee surgery in 2021. A setback last season forced Kinlaw to miss 11 games. Fans were ready to label the defensive lineman a "bust." Some already had.

The defensive lineman just could not stay on the football field.

Kinlaw is finally healthy, though, and making his presence known. The defensive tackle is on pace for his best Pro Football Focus grade after an unimpressive first three NFL seasons. Kinlaw finished with a 31.9 overall grade in 2022. That has jumped to 82.5 through three games this season.

Kinlaw has recorded six total pressures and six hurries in limited playing time this season. That matches his totals for all of last season. His pass rush win percentage has increased from 6.6 in 2022 to 19.3 this season.

Is this the best Kyle Shanahan has seen Kinlaw play?

"Yes, because it's the healthiest [he's been]," the coach responded via a conference call on Friday. "I go all the way back to his rookie year, right when he started getting going. I felt, probably since then, the best he was was his rookie year, right before that Dallas game. And then, when he hit his knee on the turf in that Dallas game, he's really never felt right since.

"This is the first offseason we've seen him feel right to where he was able to get himself in complete football shape and be ready to go for practices before they even started, which was the first time that allowed him to get through practices. So he got better at football this offseason with training camp and everything, and really, really happy for him because he's put the work in, and it's showing up on the film."

One of Kinlaw's teammates has also noticed the "huge" improvement in the defensive tackle.

"He's just been healthy and a really good offseason of training," defensive end Nick Bosa said after Thursday night's 30-12 win over the New York Giants. "So he's able to use the tools that he has, and I think he's going to keep ascending."

Ambry Thomas showing 49ers there's "not that many out there better than me"

The San Francisco 49ers' defense delivered an impressive performance in Sunday's 42-19 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite reportedly exploring options for another starting-caliber cornerback before the October trade deadline, the team ultimately stuck with Charvarius Ward and Ambry Thomas on the outside. Thomas playing outside has allowed Deommodore Lenoir to move to the slot corner spot. Defensive coordinator Steve Wilks seems to have found a recipe for success. Thomas has been impressive in recent weeks, earning his highest-ever overall Pro Football Focus grade (90.2) on Thanksgiving night against the Seattle Seahawks. We'll have to wait until Monday morning to learn how his performance against the Eagles compares, but it's evident that Thomas is

Nick Bosa and Javon Hargrave share perspectives on 49ers vs. Eagles

San Francisco 49ers fans would love to see their team knock off the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, avenging last season's playoff loss that ended their Super Bowl aspirations. However, for the players and coaches, it's just the next opponent on the schedule. The locker room remains focused on the bigger picture—winning a championship. The Eagles reached the Super Bowl last year but fell short against the Kansas City Chiefs. They beat the Chiefs in Week 11. "I mean, last year, it's over with," defensive end Nick Bosa told reporters before Wednesday's practice. "Neither team finished the job, so it's not like they're looking back and reminiscing on an NFC Championship win either. I'm

Kyle Shanahan, 49ers players critical of Eagles staff member getting chippy with Dre Greenlaw

By Kirk Larrabee
Dec 3

While there were a number of highlights that took place for the 49ers in their 42-19 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, the most memorable moment might have come when things got heated between 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw and Eagles senior advisor to the general manager/chief security officer Dom DiSandro. The incident happened in the third quarter of Sunday's game with the 49ers holding a 21-6 lead. Greenlaw made a physical tackle on wide receiver DeVonta Smith near the Eagles sideline, which resulted in Greenlaw getting a 15-yard penalty. The tackle also prompted Eagles players, coaches and DiSandro to approach Greenlaw in Smith's defense. DiSandro put his hand on Greenlaw and gave him a slight push, after which Greenlaw poked DiSandro in the face. Both Greenlaw

49ers being favored over Eagles 'doesn't make a lot of sense' to Kyle Shanahan

Sitting at 10-1, the Philadelphia Eagles own the NFL's best record. They are set to host the San Francisco 49ers in a highly anticipated NFC Championship Game rematch on Sunday in front of a rowdy Lincoln Financial Field crowd. Despite the Eagles' five-game winning streak, the 8-3 road-team 49ers are currently favored by three points. Oddsmakers might be favoring the 49ers because of how they have won games recently. Bouncing back from a challenging October, the team is now on a three-game winning streak, dominating opponents with an average margin of victory of 20.7 points. In contrast, the Eagles have secured victories with a more modest average margin of 4.8 points over their last four games, including an overtime win against the Buffalo Bills on
