The San Francisco 49ers' two starting safeties, Tashaun Gipson and Talanoa Hufanga, are working their way back. Gipson did not practice during Monday's bonus session. He is dealing with an undisclosed injury but intends to be out on the field with his teammates when the defense lines up against the Pittsburgh Steelers offense on Sunday morning.
The other half of that duo, Hufanga, has been working through a cyst behind his knee that has tightened the area. He did not play in the 49ers' preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers.
"I don't know how much I'm allowed to talk about injuries," Hufanga said, per Branch. "I'll just say it happened in (training) camp. I played through it for a few weeks and then just decided I needed to take a look at it."
Like Gipson, linebacker Dre Greenlaw expects to play against the Steelers. He has been working through a hamstring injury for several weeks, missing the entire preseason.
"I'm ready to go," Greenlaw said. "I feel good."
Greenlaw and Hufanga practiced on Monday. 49ers players will have Tuesday off. Then, on Wednesday, the team will begin its typical game-week practice schedule with three consecutive days of on-field work.
