The San Francisco 49ers have officially signed cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles to their practice squad, a move that was first reported on Wednesday by Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team. General manager John Lynch confirmed the impending signing shortly after the report.
"I think outside-inside versatility, plays some nickel, plays some outside, has some speed, and a very good special team player," Lynch said of Jean-Charles. "And when you're going to be vying to be a flex or be developed, that special team's value is really huge. And we felt like our pro guys did a real good job of identifying him and then selling him on our opportunity."
The 49ers Communications staff provided the following rundown.
Jean-Charles (5-10, 184) was originally drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round (178th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft. Throughout his two-year NFL career, he has appeared in 20 games and registered two tackles. He has also appeared in one postseason contest with the Packers.
A 25-year-old native of Miramar, FL, Jean-Charles attended Appalachian State University for four seasons (2017-20), where he appeared in 50 games (25 starts) and registered 97 tackles, 33 passes defensed, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
