San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch answered a lot of questions about Trey Lance after Friday night's preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers. Ahead of the game, the team traded the third-year quarterback to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick, closing the book on what might end up being one of the worst trades in franchise history.
While the quarterback situation was a big offseason storyline, it wasn't the only one of significance. With Lance headed to a new NFL home, the focus will undoubtedly shift to Nick Bosa's contract status.
Bosa didn't report for training camp with his teammates on July 25. He has remained away as he awaits a new contract. The negotiations have taken much longer than anyone outside the organization anticipated, with some wondering if a deal will get finalized before the 49ers travel to open their regular season against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Does Lynch still believe a deal is imminent and will get done before Week 1?
"Yeah, I do," Lynch responded during his post-game press conference. "And we got a lot of work to do, and we'll continue to do that. He's a great player. We want them here. We need them here."
That leaves the 49ers with about two weeks to get the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year signed and into the building. Hopefully, the negotiations don't drag out further, and fans receive good news soon.
