Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams took a punishing hit from San Francisco 49ers defenders Oren Burks and Charvarius Ward during Friday's practice, the final joint practice between the two teams. After being examined by trainers, Adams limped off the field with a lower right leg injury, later heading to the locker room.
"I don't think it was anything crazy serious," Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels told reporters after practice. "It was just kind of a bang-bang play."
The two practices have been very competitive, which is often the case when you get two teams together for the first time after players have grown tired of repeatedly hitting their teammates. The added factor of practicing in the Las Vegas-area heat probably doens't help.
"Great opportunity for us to be able to have this chance to go against someone else," 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks told reporters after Friday's practice. "We've been hitting each other for a while."
Of course, no one wants to see an injury, and the coach expressed his hope for a quick recovery.
"Unfortunate Adams went down," Wilks said. "I really thought it was just a bang-bang hit. Definitely nothing intentional, and definitely hoping that he has a speedy recovery because he's definitely one of the top players in this league. So I want to see him out there performing and doing his thing."
It's unlikely Adams will be out there on Sunday for the preseason opener between the two teams. The Raiders will probably be cautious with their star receiver.
Adams finished last season, his first with the Raiders, with 100 receptions for 1,516 yards and an NFL-leading 14 receiving touchdowns.
