The San Francisco 49ers were faced with a problem at the quarterback position last offseason when longtime starter Jimmy Garoppolo failed his physical ahead of the new league year in March, meaning the team couldn't move on from the signal-caller due to guaranteed money for injury, while a trade market failed to materialize.
As a result, the 49ers held onto Garoppolo for the entirety of the offseason, where the infamous picture of the quarterback rehabbing on a field away from the team during training camp surfaced, before the two sides agreed to a restructure, keeping the veteran in the Bay Area for a final season.
However, following the 2023 season, where Garoppolo enjoyed a strong run in relief of Trey Lance prior to a foot injury, the 49ers made it clear that they would not bring back the 2014 third-rounder for another year.
Garoppolo then signed a three-year, $67.5 million extension with the Las Vegas Raiders in turn, but that move didn't come without complications, as the quarterback failed his physical, placing the deal in jeopardy.
Finally, a resolution came in place earlier this weekend, as Garoppolo passed his physical when reporting to training camp, meaning that the deal cannot be nullified and that he will be a Raider in 2023.
What does that mean? Well, Garoppolo will be seeing his former team sooner than later, as the 49ers and Raiders are scheduled to hold two joint practices ahead of their preseason bout on August 13th.
After a tumultuous career with the 49ers, led by consistent controversy on how productive he was in a quarterback-friendly system, Garoppolo's first opportunity to change the narrative around him as a quarterback will, amusingly enough, come against his former team.
