49ers add Darrell Luter Jr. to PUP list ahead of training camp

Jul 18, 2023 at 2:16 PM

Per the NFL transaction wire, the San Francisco 49ers are adding defensive back Darrell Luter Jr. to the physically unable to perform (PUP) list ahead of training camp.

In April, the team made Luter (6-0, 189) a fifth-round draft pick out of South Alabama. The defensive back registered 42 tackles, 0.5 tackles for a loss, seven passes defensed, and an interception through 13 game appearances as a senior in 2022, per Sports Reference. He recorded 91 tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss, 18 passes defensed, five interceptions, and a forced fumble through his three collegiate seasons.

Depending on the severity of the injury, Luter will likely have an opportunity to work his way back to the practice field in the coming weeks. It is currently unclear what injury he is working through, as the NFL transaction wire only declares changes in roster statuses.

49ers rookies reported to training camp today, but the real action will kick off next week after veterans arrive. Until then, the first-year players will participate in strength and conditioning. The entire 49ers coaching staff is expected to report later this week.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was the latest player to leap past Mahomes, reportedly signing a five-year extension worth up to $275 million. That $55 million average ties him with Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals as the highest-paid player in NFL

The San Francisco 49ers have had success signing their big-name players to contract extensions in recent years, securing deals with George Kittle, Fred Warner, Deebo Samuel, and Nick Bosa. However, that last one didn't get finalized until dangerously close to the start of the regular season. This year, the team has been trying to get a deal done with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. While the 49ers were confident early on, given their successful track record, that a deal would be reached, the two sides reportedly remain far apart in negotiations. How George Kittle responded to a question about 49ers' Super Bowl strategy

By David Bonilla
Jun 11

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle joined the "Dan Patrick Show" and was asked a question he had not encountered before: What would he change about the strategy the 49ers deployed in their Super Bowl loss against the Kansas City Chiefs? Kittle didn't immediately have an answer. However, after reflecting on the game, he prioritized better ball protection, feeling that might have made the difference. The fumble by running back Christian McCaffrey during the opening drive is the one play that sticks out in the tight end's mind. "I think if we could [avoid] that turnover, I think that's a difference," Kittle stated. It's worth noting that Kittle had an opportunity to recover the fumble, which would have kept the football in the 49ers'
