The San Francisco 49ers plan to hire former Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks as their new defensive coordinator, per NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. He replaces former 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, who
left to become the head coach of the Houston Texans.
Wilks inherits this season's top-ranked defense, a unit that features several stars, including defensive end
Nick Bosa and linebacker
Fred Warner. He interviewed with the 49ers on Monday.
The 53-year-old entered the NFL coaching ranks as a defensive backs coach with the Chicago Bears in 2006. The coach later served in the same role with the then-San Diego Chargers (2009-11) before joining the Panthers in 2012. He was promoted to Carolina's assistant head coach and defensive backs coach in 2015 and then to assistant head coach and defensive coordinator in 2017.
Wilks served as the Arizona Cardinals head coach for one season in 2018, followed by one-year defensive coordinator stints with the Cleveland Browns (2019) and the University of Missouri (2021) before rejoining the Panthers as their defensive passing game coordinator and secondary coach in 2022.
Wilks took over as Carolina's interim head coach after the firing of head coach Matt Rhule. On January 26, the Panthers hired Reich as their next head coach.

Steve Wilks Proving to Be Right Choice for 49ers
The 49ers offseason was dominated by the questions at QB. And rightfully so, Brock Purdy's cinderella ride was cut short by a UCL injury sustained in the first quarter of the NFC Championship Game. When you add in the fact that former first round pick Trey Lance was also coming off of an injury heading into training camp, figuring out who was going to be under center come Week 1 was amongst the top concerns for 49er fans. Last years success has the fan base excited about the teams chances to hoist Lombardi #6 with this ultra talented roster.
In contrast, one of the lesser talked about storylines of this offseason was the hire of defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. With DeMecco Ryans vacating the position to become the head coach of the Houston Texans, for the second time in
John Lynch, Steve Wilks believe sacks will come for 49ers' Nick Bosa
Nick Bosa played 56 percent of the defensive snaps in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year did not reach Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett in the game.
On Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers pass rusher played 79 percent of the defensive snaps, again being held without a sack as Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford quickly got the football out of his hands.
Bosa held out for six weeks as he awaited a contract extension, which didn't come until just days before Week 1. The defensive end missed all of training camp and the preseason. Has the absence contributed to a lack of productivity?

49ers mailbag: What are the keys to beating the Cardinals? Can Arizona run on SF? Is Steve Wilks better than his predecessors?
A week ago, it seemed like the Arizona Cardinals would easily fall to the San Francisco 49ers. But after the Cardinals handled the Dallas Cowboys to notch their first victory last Sunday, the 49ers will have to work hard not to overlook Arizona. In the NFL, you really shouldn't overlook any team. That especially goes for teams in your division.
So what are the keys to the 49ers beating the Cardinals and moving to 4-0? Let me give you four quick thoughts:
Don't let Arizona run on you. The Cardinals ran the ball 30 times against the Cowboys and gained 222 yards. They weren't quite as dominant in the two games before that and lost both, but they still had some success, especially against the Giants. According to Steph Sanchez, "Arizona's offense has
Brock Purdy, Steve Wilks, Chris Foerster preview 49ers-Cardinals Week 4 matchup
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, and offensive line coach and run game coordinator Chris Foerster spoke with reporters after Thursday's practice, as the team prepares for its Week 4 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. Here is everything they had to say.

Do you have to do extra rehab with the arm and stuff?
"I would say no. It's just, like I said before, just like some pre-practice throwing stuff and post throwing stuff. All things that I've done in the past as a quarterback."
Last week the Giants blitzed you about 85% of the time and you threw for 300
