Tom Brady is not headed to the San Francisco 49ers. The first-ballot Hall of Fame quarterback made it official on Wednesday morning, announcing his retirement on social media. Brady briefly retired last year before deciding to return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"I'm retiring … for good," Brady said this time around.
He added, "You only get one super-emotional retirement essay, and I used mine up last year."
Brady was scheduled to become a free agent and likely would have been a highly sought one. Many speculated that he might want to join the 49ers, the team he grew up loving and the team that could have signed him in 2020 but opted to go with Jimmy Garoppolo instead.
Brady finished his NFL career as a seven-time Super Bowl champion, five-time Super Bowl MVP, and three-time NFL MVP. Not bad for the 199th overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft.
