Tom Brady retires “for good,” ending Brady-to-49ers chatter

Feb 1, 2023 at 6:46 AM--

Tom Brady is not headed to the San Francisco 49ers. The first-ballot Hall of Fame quarterback made it official on Wednesday morning, announcing his retirement on social media. Brady briefly retired last year before deciding to return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"I'm retiring … for good," Brady said this time around.

He added, "You only get one super-emotional retirement essay, and I used mine up last year."

Brady was scheduled to become a free agent and likely would have been a highly sought one. Many speculated that he might want to join the 49ers, the team he grew up loving and the team that could have signed him in 2020 but opted to go with Jimmy Garoppolo instead.

Brady finished his NFL career as a seven-time Super Bowl champion, five-time Super Bowl MVP, and three-time NFL MVP. Not bad for the 199th overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft.

Canton awaits.

From Hall of Fame royalty to NFL soap opera: The 49ers' never-ending QB drama

By Marc Adams

"The 49ers were Camelot...and you know who Sir Lancelot was." - Carmen Policy, at Joe Montana's retirement ceremony It's a classic soap opera, one you can always count on to give you plenty of drama, complete with heroes, villains, and a plethora of twists and turns. No, I'm not talking about General Hospital. This show isn't taking place in a fictional city called Port Charles (don't ask how I know that name), but rather in the real-life Bay Area city known as Santa Clara. Of course, I'm speaking about the quarterback theater of the San Francisco 49ers. It's a quarterback room that once boasted back-to-back Hall of Famers, followed by a 3-time Pro Bowler.

49ers considered trading Mike McGlinchey last year

By David Bonilla
Mar 25

Mike McGlinchey received a life-changing payday, signing a five-year, $87.5 million deal with the Denver Broncos. The offensive tackle has known for a while that he would not return to the San Francisco 49ers, the only NFL team he has played for and the one that made him the No. 9 overall pick in 2018. General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan made it clear to McGlinchey that he was likely playing his final months for the team. There was too much money invested in other spots, and the 49ers knew they couldn't compete with other interested teams. Behind the scenes, Lynch and Shanahan kept McGlinchey in the loop of what the team was thinking, and everything pointed to the tackle playing elsewhere in 2023 … maybe even

Brock Purdy can begin throwing again sometime in June. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback is expected to be ready to hit the field—practice or in-game—sometime in September. Purdy is recovering from surgery to repair the tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow, an injury sustained in the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He hasn't been seen since the surgery, with his last public appearance taking place In Arizona, during the week leading to the Super Bowl. One fan spotted Purdy, though, getting a photo with the 49ers quarterback (h/t TheSFNiners). As expected, Purdy is wearing a massive brace on his throwing arm,
