If all goes as expected, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans could be named the new head coach of the Houston Texans very soon. NFL insider Ian Rapoport announced that the Texans' second interview with Ryans has concluded, and the assistant coach is widely considered the frontrunner for the coaching vacancy.
The #Texans second interview with #49ers DC DeMeco Ryans has concluded. He flew in last night, and met with the team's brass this morning.
The Texans interviewed Ryans on January 20, ahead of the 49ers' Divisional Round playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys. Ryans also interviewed with the Denver Broncos on January 19 but reportedly informed the team that he was no longer interested in their head coaching job.
Ryans joined 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan's staff in 2017 and has spent the past two seasons as the team's defensive coordinator.
Joining the Texans would mean a reunion with the team that selected Ryans in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He played linebacker for six seasons in Houston.
