The San Francisco 49ers will hold a light practice, their only one of the week, inside Levi's Stadium tonight. Brock Purdy will be among the players doing less than the others. He is dealing with an oblique/rib injury that he sustained in this past weekend's win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The rookie quarterback's status for Thursday night's game remains uncertain.

"We'll find out as these two days go," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters. "We don't have much time, but we're not going to try to figure that out today or tomorrow. It will probably be on Thursday where we have the best chance to know."

Purdy, however, expects to be on the field with his teammates for the crucial NFC West showdown. It will be his first start on the road, and a win would clinch a division title for the 49ers and ensure the team opens the postseason at home.

Purdy admits that he was sore on Monday but was feeling better today.

"I feel good," Purdy told reporters. "Just taking it one day at a time, getting as much treatment as I can, but overall, I feel pretty good."

The quarterback hasn't tried throwing a football since Sunday. He feels like he can still jog and run, but the coach may keep him from doing even that in practice.

Purdy added, "Yeah, it wasn't like excruciating pain or anything like that. It's just where I was at, just sore after a game."

Shanahan was asked if there was concern that Purdy could do further damage if he played on Thursday night.

"No," Shanahan responded. "It's just, can he play with it? If he plays, he won't be able to make it worse."

Deebo Samuel timeline

On Monday, Jordan Schultz of The Score reported that wide receiver Deebo Samuel could return from his MCL and ankle sprains as soon as Week 17. That seems to match the timeline that Shanahan provided when asked about the injured receiver.

"There's four weeks left in the season," Shanahan said. "I think they told me three-ish [weeks] is their expectation. Right in that area."

After Thursday night's game in Seattle, the 49ers will host the Washington Commanders on Christmas Eve and then travel to play the Raiders in Las Vegas before closing out the regular season at home against the Arizona Cardinals.

Practice participation

Shanahan noted that the following players would not practice.

  • QB Jimmy Garoppolo (foot)
  • DT Kevin Givens (knee)
  • DB Tarvarius Moore (knee)
  • DT Hassan Ridgeway (pectoral)
  • WR Deebo Samuel (knee/ankle)
  • CB Samuel Womack (concussion)

The following players will be limited.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw for a franchise-record 4,280 yards last season, leading the team to the Super Bowl and earning his first Pro Bowl selection. He held onto the football 39 times on the ground, rushing for 144 yards and scoring twice. This marked a significant improvement over his rookie 2022 campaign when he had 22 carries for 13 yards and a score. Purdy further displayed his athleticism during the 49ers' playoff game against the Detroit Lions last season, helping engineer a comeback victory while rushing for 48 yards on five carries. On Tuesday morning, Purdy joined the "Pat McAfee Show," acknowledging that he believes he can contribute more rushing yards if called upon. However, that decision rests with head coach Kyle Shanahan,

A questionable rumor surfaced on Wednesday regarding the Pittsburgh Steelers' interest in San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Sports Illustrated contributor Noah Strackbein reported that the AFC team was seemingly confident they could pull off a trade for Aiyuk. However, the credibility of this report comes into question due to the assertion that the Steelers believe they could acquire Aiyuk at a bargain price, possibly in exchange for a second-round draft pick and a late-round selection. With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, it's common for the rumor mill to start churning, especially with players who are actively seeking a new contract. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal. Now, it's WR Brandon Aiyuk's turn to try and get paid and rumors surfaced over the weekend that he too would request to be dealt. While that report was quickly shot down by his agent, there's still a lot of discussion about Aiyuk's future and if other teams will come calling on draft night. Why one analyst is worried for Brock Purdy if 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 18

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the illustrious quarterbacks who have graced the organization's history. A significant portion of those yards came from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a career-high and team-leading 1,342 receiving yards. Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy. Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Former NFL player James Jones, now an analyst, expressed concern for Purdy should Aiyuk's tenure in the Bay Area come to an end. "I
