49ers push forward with Brock Purdy, Josh Johnson, didn’t submit claim for Baker Mayfield

Dec 6, 2022 at 1:38 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers did not submit a claim for former Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. There was a lot of speculation that they might, giving rookie Brock Purdy a veteran backup with plenty of starting experience.

Mayfield is headed to the NFC West, though. He will join the 3-9 Los Angeles Rams, not the 8-4 division-leading 49ers. The Rams sat at No. 4 in the waiver wire priority order. San Francisco is at No. 24, so the chances of Mayfield falling to the Niners, had they been interested, was unlikely.

"We look into everything," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Monday when asked about Mayfield. "But that would surprise me right now, and we've got to discuss it this afternoon and stuff. I've always been a fan of his, but I feel real good about our players."

RELATED Garoppolo won't require surgery, might only miss 7-8 weeks

On Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Jimmy Garoppolo's foot injury, once considered season-ending, isn't as severe as initially assumed. The quarterback suffered the injury on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins but won't require surgery after all. Instead, Schefter reports that there is a chance for him to return in 7-8 weeks, making him a potential playoff contributor.

So it will be Purdy, Mr. Irrelevant in this year's draft, helming Shanahan's offense for the remainder of the regular season and possibly a playoff game or two, assuming the 49ers get that far. He will be joined by veteran NFL journeyman Josh Johnson, who the team officially signed on Tuesday. San Francisco also has quarterback Jacob Eason on the practice squad.

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Brock Purdy is now 7-0 as a starter, not including his Week 13 efforts after replacing Jimmy Garoppolo and leading the team to a win over the Miami Dolphins. The 49ers have faced two playoff opponents, and Purdy has done everything necessary to secure his team a contest against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game this weekend. Aside from the poise and leadership Purdy has shown over the last eight games, the rookie quarterback hasn't thrown an interception since January 1. Rapoport: Brock Purdy injury robbed fans of competitive matchup, made 49ers-Eagles an unfair fight

By David Bonilla
Jan 30

The Philadelphia Eagles might have been the better team in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday. But were they 31-7 better than the San Francisco 49ers? Probably not. Of course, we are all left wondering what might have happened had rookie quarterback Brock Purdy not been hurt in the first quarter. The 49ers felt they had prepared a great game plan for their bout with the Eagles. Unfortunately, that quickly got thrown out the window. "We were really excited for today, and we really wanted an opportunity to play that team," head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game. "They played great, and they did good things, but we wish we had a little bit better
