49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo to undergo season-ending foot surgery
The San Francisco 49ers knocked off the visiting Miami Dolphins 33-17 on Sunday, doing so with rookie quarterback
Brock Purdy at the helm of the offense, not
Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo suffered a left foot injury on the team's first offensive drive and was ruled out for the remainder of the game.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters after the game, providing an update on his injured starting quarterback. Garoppolo suffered a broken foot and will undergo season-ending surgery.
"Just hearing it, it was pretty crushing," Shanahan said. "We know what Jimmy's been through, how hard he's worked at this. I got the news in the second quarter, so it was a little different for me ... it was such a special win. But definitely mixed emotions hearing about Jimmy.
"I told the guys right after the game, so I know that gave them some mixed emotions fast too, but it was a hell of a job by Brock, coming in and stepping it up. He did a real good job today, and we're going to be ready to do our best to overcome this."
Shanahan added that Garoppolo left the stadium in the third quarter. The coach also said there isn't a possibility that the 49ers would try to activate second-year quarterback
Trey Lance from the injured reserve list down the road. The offense appears to be in Purdy's hands moving forward.
Garoppolo has started every game since Lance went down in Week 2 with a season-ending ankle injury. With the win, San Francisco improves its record to 8-4 and will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Levi's Stadium in Week 14.

49ers' Kyle Shanahan still not optimistic about Jimmy Garoppolo's return this week
It seems it's time for your weekly Jimmy Garoppolo update. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback has been sidelined since suffering a broken foot on December 4. However, there is a slight chance Garoppolo could return and suit up for the playoffs, likely serving as rookie Brock Purdy's backup.
That probably won't be this week, though.
Last week, head coach Kyle Shanahan stated that the quarterback probably wouldn't be ready for an NFC Championship Game appearance. However, Garoppolo suiting up for the Super Bowl, should the 49ers make it that far, might be more likely.
On Monday, Shanahan was once again asked about Garoppolo's recovery and
49ers' Kyle Shanahan provides timeline on potential Jimmy Garoppolo return
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is making progress in his return from a broken foot. However, whether or not he returns at any point during the playoffs remains up in the air.
"It was the first week he was able to come out on the field, walk around a little bit, do some work out there," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Friday.
Garoppolo was just working through his rehab, the coach said. Of course, reporters seeing the injured quarterback prompted questions about his timeline for a return. Could Garoppolo potentially be ready to suit up—likely as Brock Purdy's backup—for the NFC Championship, assuming the 49ers make it past the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday?
"I'd be surprised, but I think it depends on how this whole
49ers don't expect Jimmy Garoppolo to be active vs. Eagles; Deebo Samuel added to injury list
It was unlikely that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suited up on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, serving as rookie Brock Purdy's backup in the NFC Championship Game. Still, there was a slight chance the injured veteran could be healthy enough to be active. The team awaited the results of an X-ray on Tuesday to see how much Garoppolo's broken foot has recovered.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters on Wednesday and shared that the 49ers got the X-ray results.
"I don't expect to have him this week," Shanahan revealed.
Garoppolo sustained his injury on December 4. A return for the Super Bowl remains a possibility.

Does Kyle Shanahan or Brock Purdy deserve more credit for the 49ers' success this season?

The San Francisco 49ers have been on a tear in the second half of the 2022 NFL season, winning 11 consecutive games, and are currently riding that hot streak into a playoff matchup against the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Divisional round.
The reason for their success as of late? While there are certainly several factors, a primary cause has been the elevation of their offense amongst the league's best, especially after quarterback Brock Purdy took over the helm.
Over their last seven games, the 49ers are averaging 396.7 yards per game, as well as 34.5 points per game, creating one of the most prolific offenses in the NFL during that period of time.
