49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo to undergo season-ending foot surgery

Dec 4, 2022 at 4:53 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers knocked off the visiting Miami Dolphins 33-17 on Sunday, doing so with rookie quarterback Brock Purdy at the helm of the offense, not Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo suffered a left foot injury on the team's first offensive drive and was ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters after the game, providing an update on his injured starting quarterback. Garoppolo suffered a broken foot and will undergo season-ending surgery.

"Just hearing it, it was pretty crushing," Shanahan said. "We know what Jimmy's been through, how hard he's worked at this. I got the news in the second quarter, so it was a little different for me ... it was such a special win. But definitely mixed emotions hearing about Jimmy.

"I told the guys right after the game, so I know that gave them some mixed emotions fast too, but it was a hell of a job by Brock, coming in and stepping it up. He did a real good job today, and we're going to be ready to do our best to overcome this."

Shanahan added that Garoppolo left the stadium in the third quarter. The coach also said there isn't a possibility that the 49ers would try to activate second-year quarterback Trey Lance from the injured reserve list down the road. The offense appears to be in Purdy's hands moving forward.

Garoppolo has started every game since Lance went down in Week 2 with a season-ending ankle injury. With the win, San Francisco improves its record to 8-4 and will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Levi's Stadium in Week 14.

49ers' Brock Purdy has no idea if he suffered long-term injury, will undergo MRI

By David Bonilla
Jan 29

The Purdy Magic ended on Sunday for the San Francisco 49ers. Not because the rookie quarterback's run of solid play ended, but because of an injury, unfortunately. Purdy did re-enter the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles, but it was only because his backup, Josh Johnson, was ruled out with a concussion. Purdy didn't expect to go back onto the field. He couldn't even effectively throw the football. The quarterback suffered an elbow injury in the first quarter on the throw that was ruled a fumble recovery by the Eagles. Testing his arm on the sideline, Purdy couldn't throw the football beyond 10 yards. "He wouldn't have gone back in if we hadn't had to," head coach Kyle Shanahan said. "It was that or we were going to have go wildcat. We didn't

Tom Brady is not headed to the San Francisco 49ers. The first-ballot Hall of Fame quarterback made it official on Wednesday morning, announcing his retirement on social media. Brady briefly retired last year before deciding to return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "I'm retiring … for good," Brady said this time around. He added, "You only get one super-emotional retirement essay, and I used mine up last year." Truly grateful on this day. Thank you 🙏🏻❤️ pic.twitter.com/j2s2sezvSS— Tom Brady (@TomBrady)

49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo says Super Bowl return 'still up in the air'

By David Bonilla
Jan 27

The San Francisco 49ers have officially ruled out quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for this weekend's NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. That wasn't unexpected. The chances of the former starter suiting up for Sunday's playoff bout, backing up rookie Brock Purdy, were slim. "Yeah, it's just been an outside chance the whole time, and that was still an outside chance," head coach Kyle Shanahan said Thursday, before that outside chance turned into no chance. The 49ers never placed Garoppolo on injured reserve, leaving the door open for a playoff return. However, we are now down to just one more game as a possibility—Super

Jets will look closely at 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo in free agency

By David Bonilla

The New York Jets will likely be looking to upgrade the quarterback position by bringing in a veteran after seemingly misfiring with Zach Wilson. Internally, one of the options being thrown around is San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Of course, he isn't the only option in what should be an intriguing offseason of potential quarterback moves. "According to sources, the Jets will be looking closely at [Aaron] Rodgers, Jimmy Garoppoloand Derek Carr," wrote Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports. "They won't limit their search to just those three quarterbacks -- and sources stress it's still early in the process --
