According to ESPN's Field Yates, the San Francisco 49ers have converted $5.45 million of tackle Trent Williams' base contract into a signing bonus, which the team will pay immediately. Williams signed a six-year, $138.06 million contract with the 49ers on March 23, 2021. His $23.01 million average annual salary remains the highest ever among offensive linemen. The 13-year veteran earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2021 and is a nine-time Pro Bowl selection.
Williams came in at No. 14 in this year's NFL Top 100 players of 2022. While it was a 28-spot jump from last year's ranking, one 49ers teammate believes it was too low for the best offensive lineman in football.
"The one I'm upset about, I don't know how Trent Williams isn't one, two, or maybe three," tight end George Kittle said earlier this month. "You just watch his tape; he physically dominates people every single play. He mentally outsmarts people every single play. He gets his hands on you, you're going to get blocked.
