49ers-Seahawks: Kyle Shanahan vs. Pete Carroll, Round 11

Sep 17, 2022 at 7:00 AM--

The San Francisco 49ers are 17-30 versus the Seattle Seahawks. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has only produced two wins out of the ten times he's faced his Seattle counterpart, Pete Carroll. The last time the 49ers beat the Seahawks was on December 29, 2019.

In December of 2021, the 49ers lost to the Seahawks 23-30 because Carroll didn't hold anything back. He wanted to win more by faking a punt on special teams, which caught the 49ers off guard. After that play, San Francisco never recovered. It was like they were traumatized, once again coming up short against their division rival.

The question is, what does Kyle Shanahan have to do to beat Carroll? It's simple—be more aggressive.

Football is the number one sport built off of aggression. There's contact in every play. Sometimes the players can be too aggressive and get unnecessary penalties which can negate the team getting free yards and extra opportunities. Carroll wins most of his matches with the 49ers because he does whatever it takes for his team to come out on top.

Perhaps Shanahan should take a page out of the veteran head coach's book. Every season, the 49ers put a more talented team on the field. However, the 49ers have fallen short of the Seahawks for the past two seasons. The old "bring it on" catchphrase states to "be aggressive, be be aggressive," even from the head coach position.

On Sunday, we'll learn which head coach wants it more.

49ers Notebook: Why not practice in Mexico City? Is Kyle Shanahan still tough on WRs? Adjusting to the altitude

By David Bonilla
Nov 19

On Saturday, the San Francisco 49ers finished up their last of three practices this week. They'll depart Colorado Springs, where they have spent the week to get acclimated to the altitude, for Mexico City on Sunday afternoon. The 49ers and Arizona Cardinals play on Monday night at Estadio Azteca, where the elevation is about 7,200 feet above sea level. The team had to practice indoors on artificial turf the last two days due to some snowfall this week. "It's not ideal, but it's not the end of the world," head coach Kyle Shanahan said after Saturday's practice. "We made it through it, and I'm happy we did it now. ... Everyone would rather be on nice, soft grass, but most of the places I've been at this time of year, there isn't soft grass. We're fortunate to have

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters after Saturday's practice in Colorado Springs, providing final updates ahead of the team's Week 11 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals in Mexico City. Here is everything he had to say. Transcript provided by the San Francisco 49ers Communications staff. Opening Comments: "What's up guys? Alright, injuries. [DL Arik] Armstead will be out this week. [DL] Samson [Ebukam] is questionable. Go ahead." A couple of your players indicated that this was a little tougher week than a normal week-long. Have you found that at all and what do you think that's about? "It's definitely tougher on the practice field. When we were in

Kyle Shanahan believes 49ers players stepping up has helped Jimmy Garoppolo, talks crowd expectations in Mexico

By David Bonilla
Nov 20

Jimmy Garoppolo is turning in one of the better seasons of his career. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback stepped in for an injured Trey Lance in Week 2 and has once again asserted himself as the leader on offense. Garoppolo has played well in the last two games. He hasn't thrown an interception in those matchups—a 31-14 win over the Los Angeles Rams and a 22-16 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Tight end George Kittle has been one of Garoppolo's biggest supporters and had a theory as to why the quarterback has impressed over the last few weeks. "I

Troy Aikman on 49ers: If I could hire any coach, Kyle Shanahan would be that guy

By David Bonilla
Nov 21

Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, who was in the broadcast booth for Monday night's game in Mexico City between the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals, said he is "a huge buyer" of the former as a legitimate threat in the NFC. The team is filled with star power and playmakers, evident by its dominant 38-10 primetime win. However, that's not necessarily the main reason the analyst has believed in the Niners for several years. "A big reason for that is because of [head coach] Kyle Shanahan," Aikman said on ESPN's SportsCenter after the game. "If I was in a position to hire a head coach, and I could hire anybody I wanted, Kyle Shanahan would be that guy. The way he's able to utilize his personnel ... I think, as we mentioned in our game, John Lynch, their general
