49ers to add depth in running back room with Marlon Mack signing

Sep 13, 2022 at 3:21 PM--

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the San Francisco 49ers plan to sign running back Marlon Mack to the team's practice squad. Mack was a fourth-round draft pick out of the University of South Florida in 2017.

This season is Mack's sixth season in the league. He spent the previous five seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. Mack's most productive season was in 2019, where he rushed for 1,091 yards on 247 carries and averaged 4.4 yards per attempt.

Mack signed with the Houston Texans on April 11 but was released on August 30 after the team chose to feature their rookie phenom, Dameon Pierce.

With Elijah Mitchell expected to miss the next couple of months, Mack should be able to get acclimated quickly and work his way up from the practice squad. He is now the veteran of the running back room that features Jeff Wilson Jr. and rookies Ty Davis-Price and Jordan Mason.

Tevin Coleman, Devonta Freeman, Godwin Igwebuike, Nate McCrary, La'Mical Perine, and Abram Smith were some notable running backs that Mack beat out. All worked out or visited with the 49ers this week.

By David Bonilla

Jimmy Garoppolo is playing some sound football. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback has had his share of critics over the years, but his team has won four consecutive games now and sits alone atop the NFC West. In Week 11, the offense seemed to be firing on all cylinders. Then, in Week 12, the defense took over and shut out the New Orleans Saints. Garoppolo's popularity inside the 49ers locker room has been well-documented. But what is it about the quarterback that makes him so likable among his teammates? "Because everybody sees kind of what goes on," 49ers safety Jimmie Ward said Tuesday morning on KNBR's Murph & Mac show. "Everybody always hears the outside noise when it comes to Jimmy G. We see the adversity that he has [faced], the perseverance

The San Francisco 49ers added a veteran Pro Bowl cornerback today ... to the practice squad. The team signed former second-round draft pick Janoris Jenkins. During a conference call, head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about the timing of the signing. Jenkins, after all, has been available all season. So why now? "Because he was willing to do it," Shanahan responded. "I don't think that was the case all year. We've been in contact with him for a little bit, and he was willing to do it. I've always been a fan of Janoris. I know most people have. He's played at a very high level in this league. "To get a player who's been like that throughout his career to come to our practice squad, we felt pretty fortunate. I think he gets here today, possibly

Deebo Samuel, Raheem Mostert add to 49ers-Dolphins hype

By David Bonilla

There's already a lot of hype surrounding the Week 13 matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins. It's the first contest between Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel and his former mentor, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. It will feature two former San Francisco running backs, Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr., returning to Levi's Stadium. Mostert joined McDaniel in Miami as a free agent this offseason. The 49ers traded Wilson to the Dolphins on November 1 after acquiring Christian McCaffrey. The hype is seemingly growing in the week leading to the game. 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel jokingly tweeted, "Raheem be real with yourself," to his former teammate after Mostert commented about his former
