Quick Takeaways

Guard Nick Zakelj was the 49ers offensive line's highest-graded player, earning an overall grade of 65.7 through 36 snaps. The starters in the game were tackle Jaylon Moore (45.1 overall grade), guard Aaron Banks (55.0), center Jake Brendel (65.0), guard Spencer Burford (37.9), and tackle Colton McKivitz (61.1).

Fullback Kyle Juszczyk earned the offense's highest overall grade—86.9. However, the sample size was only two snaps.

Tight end Ross Dwelley, who caught all three of his targets for 42 yards, earned the highest overall offensive grade (79.5) after Juszczyk and the highest receiving grade (91.3) among 49ers quarterbacks' targets.

Speaking of quarterbacks, all three played in the game (not counting Jimmy Garoppolo, of course). Starter Trey Lance, who spent much of his 24 snaps avoiding the Texans pass rush due to sub-par offensive-line play, earned an overall grade of 46.3. Nate Sudfeld, who played just 16 snaps, graded slightly worse at 45.6 overall.

Rookie Brock Purdy emerged as the highest-graded quarterback and the third-highest-graded offensive player overall, going 13-of-20 passing for 182 yards and an interception.

Jeff Wilson Jr. was the highest-graded running back (not counting Juszczyk), with second-year tailback Trey Sermon coming in with the second-highest grade (69.6) among the position group.

Defensive end Kemoko Turay was the 49ers' highest-graded player, earning an 89.5 overall grade and a team-high 81.1 pass-rushing grade through 21 snaps.

Rookie cornerback Samuel Womack's 71.9 overall grade was the highest among non-defensive linemen, and his 79.4 run-defense grade led the team.

Super Bowl-winning head coach Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs witnessed all he needed from Brock Purdy last season to assure him that the San Francisco 49ers are in capable hands at the quarterback position. Purdy was an MVP nominee in 2023 and had his 49ers just a play or two away from clinching a Super Bowl victory away from the Chiefs. Unfortunately, for Purdy and the 49ers, Reid and his own quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, widely regarded as the best in the game today, dashed their Super Bowl dreams in overtime last month. Kyle Shanahan: 49ers hope to keep Brandon Aiyuk, Brock Purdy together

By David Bonilla
Mar 26

Last week, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan ran into his wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk, while on vacation in Cabo San Lucas. "He was randomly at our hotel. I don't think he wanted to be," the coach shared on Tuesday while speaking to reporters at the NFL owners meetings. The 49ers are currently negotiating a long-term extension with Aiyuk to ensure he remains with the team for the foreseeable future.
