The San Francisco 49ers lost their preseason finale 17-0 to the Houston Texans, finishing their exhibition schedule with a 2-1 record. Pro Football Focus released its grades from the game. Which Niners played well, and who has more work to do?

Below are Pro Football Focus' five highest-graded 49ers players on offense against the Texans.

Quick Takeaways

Guard Nick Zakelj was the 49ers offensive line's highest-graded player, earning an overall grade of 65.7 through 36 snaps. The starters in the game were tackle Jaylon Moore (45.1 overall grade), guard Aaron Banks (55.0), center Jake Brendel (65.0), guard Spencer Burford (37.9), and tackle Colton McKivitz (61.1).

Fullback Kyle Juszczyk earned the offense's highest overall grade—86.9. However, the sample size was only two snaps.

Tight end Ross Dwelley, who caught all three of his targets for 42 yards, earned the highest overall offensive grade (79.5) after Juszczyk and the highest receiving grade (91.3) among 49ers quarterbacks' targets.

Speaking of quarterbacks, all three played in the game (not counting Jimmy Garoppolo, of course). Starter Trey Lance, who spent much of his 24 snaps avoiding the Texans pass rush due to sub-par offensive-line play, earned an overall grade of 46.3. Nate Sudfeld, who played just 16 snaps, graded slightly worse at 45.6 overall.

Rookie Brock Purdy emerged as the highest-graded quarterback and the third-highest-graded offensive player overall, going 13-of-20 passing for 182 yards and an interception.

Jeff Wilson Jr. was the highest-graded running back (not counting Juszczyk), with second-year tailback Trey Sermon coming in with the second-highest grade (69.6) among the position group.

Defensive end Kemoko Turay was the 49ers' highest-graded player, earning an 89.5 overall grade and a team-high 81.1 pass-rushing grade through 21 snaps.

Rookie cornerback Samuel Womack's 71.9 overall grade was the highest among non-defensive linemen, and his 79.4 run-defense grade led the team.

How 49ers' lack of interest in Patrick Mahomes led to Brock Purdy

By David Bonilla
Mar 1

You've undoubtedly heard this story before—a narrative tracing the path from the San Francisco 49ers' disinterest in drafting a quarterback in 2017 to their selection of quarterback Brock Purdy in 2022 with the last overall pick. ESPN's Adam Schefter recently revisited this tale, though it's one that's been shared numerous times. During a recent conversation on the "Pardon My Take" podcast, Schefter discussed the 49ers' lack of interest in adding a rookie quarterback in 2017, including future Hall of Famer Patrick Mahomes, despite initially owning the No. 2 overall pick. What led the 49ers to avoid thoroughly evaluating quarterbacks from that draft class? Head coach Kyle Shanahan believed the team could secure Kirk Cousins the following offseason. However,

With Brock Purdy's injury now behind him, 49ers GM John Lynch says QB can focus on "areas of improvement rather than just getting well"

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy had a remarkable 2023 season. It was his first full season as the starter, and Purdy did not disappoint, passing for 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns. He also led the league in passer rating at 113.0. And Purdy became the 49ers' first Pro Bowl QB since Jeff Garcia was selected in 2002. Matt Maiocco, of NBC Sports Bay Area, recently sat down with 49ers GM John Lynch, for the latest episode of 49ers Talk. They talked about the season Purdy had, and how different this offseason is compared to last offseason, when Purdy was coming off a torn UCL suffered in the NFC Championship Game. There was plenty of speculation as to whether or not Purdy would play

Why Chiefs' Steve Spagnuolo reached out to 49ers' Brock Purdy after the Super Bowl

By David Bonilla
Feb 23

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has earned a fan in Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Following the Chiefs' victory over the 49ers in Super Bowl 58, Spagnuolo made sure to extend his regards to Purdy. "I just texted Brock the other day," Spagnuolo disclosed in a recent conversation with Peter Schrager on "The Season" podcast. "I tried to track down his cell number. I just wanted to tell him how much respect I have for him [and] what a terrific game he played. He's such a quality guy, strong Christian man, and I respect all of that, and I'm happy for all the success." Naturally, while Spagnuolo is content that Purdy didn't overly excel in the Super Bowl, he expressed admiration for the young quarterback, saying, "I think Brock

John Lynch says Brock Purdy has given 49ers stability at QB

By Marc Adams
Feb 27

The San Francisco 49ers finally have stability at the quarterback position. And it's been a while coming. Three years ago, the team was on the verge of making a major trade for the chance to draft Trey Lance, who they hoped would be the QB they had been waiting on. They needed to find a new quarterback because of the lack of stability at the position, primarily due to the number of games starting QB Jimmy Garoppolo seemed to miss most seasons. But after watching Lance for some time, questions began to arise as to whether or not he could be the quarterback they drafted him to be. And after he and Garoppolo both were lost to injury in 2022, Brock Purdy, the barely-drafted seventh-rounder came in and saved the season, leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game. But a torn
