Everyone awaits a resolution to the Deebo Samuel drama that has captivated the media this offseason. The San Francisco 49ers' star receiver is due a contract extension but requested to be traded in April after nothing seemed imminent.
It seems that remains the case. General manager John Lynch told reporters that nothing is imminent as the 49ers report to training camp this week. However, he hopes to have some exciting news soon because the two sides have had good discussions.
"We've had really productive and substantive talks," Lynch said on Tuesday. "I don't want to get everyone all excited that something is imminent because we're not there yet. But we're really hopeful that, in the near future, we'll be able to announce something that's exciting for everyone involved. So that's good. Deebo's here today, and we're excited about moving forward with him as part of this team."
Samuel had a breakout season in 2021, proving to be the 49ers' next offensive player. He amassed 1,770 all-purpose yards and 14 total touchdowns as San Francisco made it to the NFC Championship Game for the second time in three years.
"We're focused on getting something done," Lynch added. "… There's not a hard deadline. Deadlines have a way of spurring these things into action. And like I said, we've had a number of productive talks, and we're hopeful that something's going to happen here in the near future."
The 49ers will hold their first training camp practice on Wednesday at 10:25 a.m. PT. That's when we'll officially learn if Samuel plans to participate.
