If the San Francisco 49ers trade wide receiver
Deebo Samuel, it will likely happen before or during the first-round of the 2022 NFL Draft, which kicks off on Thursday night. That's when the team can get the most value for him. On Wednesday, Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network reported that the New York Jets remain the front-runners to acquire Samuel and are looking to prepare a trade package that they hope will blow the 49ers away.
"Everyone says that Kyle Shanahan would like to keep Deebo Samuel, but again, the feeling is what the Jets will offer—as they said in The Godfather—the
Jets are going to make the Niners an offer they can't refuse," said Pauline.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler notes that those around the league also consider the Jets to be the front-runners for Samuel, adding that some interested teams don't expect the 49ers to trade the receiver.
"
Multiple teams are calling, and it's believed San Francisco is at least listening," Fowler wrote. "I'm told the Lions and Packers also have interest. As one source pointed out, 'It would take so much for Kyle [Shanahan] to trade him to Green Bay,' given the rivalry both in the NFC and between the two coaches, Shanahan and Matt LaFleur."
One way or another, we'll know more about the Deebo Samuel situation by Thursday night.
Then you have Jimmy Garoppolo, who the 49ers actually
would like to trade. They haven't been able to do so because the quarterback underwent shoulder surgery on March 8.
"I think the [rehab] progress is good," general manager John Lynch said on Monday. "
So he's tracking kind of right where we said—throwing towards the end of June and ramping it up from there."
No one is trading for an injured quarterback who isn't considered an elite talent, even when healthy. Many wonder if there will be any quarterback-needy teams once Garoppolo is fully recovered.
"I don't get the sense that the Jimmy Garoppolo market is hot right now," wrote Dan Graziano, "and the 49ers have made their peace with the fact that teams won't be willing to part with much in exchange for Garoppolo until after they've seen him thrown in late June/early July coming off shoulder surgery."

49ers OTAs: Trey Lance comments on offseason trade rumors; Shanahan on QB getting first-team reps
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has been pleased with what he's seen from Trey Lance during these first two organized team activities (OTAs) practices. The third-year quarterback entered last season as the team's starting quarterback. An ankle injury during Week 2 ended that.
Now fully recovered, Lance is looking to prove himself to his coaches. The former No. 3 overall pick has taken all of the first-team reps during these two practices. However, Shanahan warns not to read too much into that.
"It'll even out," Shanahan said. "We'll make sure to get that right."
A reporter was already asking another question when Shanahan interrupted him to clear up a potential misconception about "first-team reps."
"And the first-team is kind of funny because
Ex-49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo underwent foot surgery in March
One of the biggest criticisms about Jimmy Garoppolo has been his availability. The quarterback wins football games but has been available for an entire season just once in his career—in 2019.
Garoppolo's latest injury occurred on December 4 while with the San Francisco 49ers. The veteran left a regular-season game against the Miami Dolphins with a foot injury. It was later revealed that he suffered a broken foot and would miss significant time. However, it wasn't believed to require surgery.
That led to the emergence of Brock Purdy, the seventh-round draft pick that took the NFL by storm. He led the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game before suffering an injury himself.
Garoppolo remained on the 49ers' 53-man roster through all that. The 49ers

Kyle Shanahan feels "really fortunate" with 49ers' QB room
Kyle Shanahan praises his quarterback room every year. Last season, the San Francisco 49ers went through three starting quarterbacks and still made it to the NFC Championship Game. Trey Lance was the Week 1 starter but suffered a season-ending ankle injury during his second game. Eleven weeks later, Jimmy Garoppolo sustained a broken foot.
That opened the door for rookie Brock Purdy to show his coaches and the NFL world that he belonged, despite being the last overall pick in the draft. Purdy guided the 49ers to eight consecutive wins before suffering a severe injury in that NFC title game matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Two of the quarterbacks from last season—Lance and Purdy—remain. Both are just 23 years old. They are joined by Sam
