Deebo Samuel expected to skip 49ers’ offseason program

The San Francisco 49ers report to their
offseason program on Tuesday. However, don't expect
Deebo Samuel to be there. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the fourth-year wide receiver is not expected to participate. At least, he won't take part in any on-field activities.
Of course, this comes as a surprise to no one. Samuel seeks a contract extension and probably won't take part in any voluntary offseason activities until the situation is settled. So the question is: Will Samuel participate in the team's mandatory minicamp from June 13 through 15 if he remains under his current contract? It's the last offseason activity before the team breaks until training camp at the end of July.
Samuel has recently scrubbed his Instagram account of all things 49ers-related. It's a tactic that is often ineffective in contract negotiations but does generate chatter among the fanbase, and this instance has done precisely that. In fact, things have gotten so bad that
Samuel claims to have received death threats and racist remarks from fans regarding the contract situation.
San Francisco made Samuel a second-round draft pick out of South Carolina in 2019. He had a breakout season in 2021, amassing 1,770 total yards and 14 total touchdowns for the 49ers in 2021, setting an NFL record for the most single-season rushing touchdowns by a wide receiver with eight.
Samuel's 1,405 receiving yards in 2021 were a career-high, and the first time the wideout had surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in his three NFL seasons.

49ers begin offseason workout program today
The San Francisco 49ers are among the 25 teams kicking off their offseason workout program today. However, don't expect to see players facing off against each other on the practice field for the next couple of weeks. The program's early portion, dubbed "Phase One," spans two weeks and includes limited activities such as meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation only.
The second phase of the offseason program extends for three weeks and includes on-field workouts for individual or group instruction and drills. After that, teams can hold up to 10 days of organized team activities on the practice field.

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, it's common for the rumor mill to start churning, especially with players who are actively seeking a new contract. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal.
Now, it's WR Brandon Aiyuk's turn to try and get paid and rumors surfaced over the weekend that he too would request to be dealt. While that report was quickly shot down by his agent, there's still a lot of discussion about Aiyuk's future and if other teams will come calling on draft night.

49ers sign WR Trent Taylor, reuniting with former draft pick
The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver Trent Taylor to a one-year deal, reuniting with the team's former fifth-round draft pick out of Louisiana Tech.
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area was the first to report that the 49ers were discussing a potential reunion with Taylor. The receiver was part of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch's first draft class in 2017 and spent his first four NFL seasons with the team.
