Trey Lance on being the 49ers’ Week 1 starter: ‘That’s the plan’

Feb 11, 2022 at 4:56 PM--

Joe Montana may feel Trey Lance isn't ready to play, but the 21-year-old, soon-to-be second-year quarterback has his eyes on being the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers come Week 1 of the 2022 season.

Lance appeared on The Rich Eisen Show, and Eisen asked the quarterback if he expects to be the starter next season.

"Yes, that's absolutely my goal, to be as ready as I possibly can for OTAs, training camp, and absolutely Week 1," Lance responded without hesitation.

Most expect the 49ers to trade this season's starting quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, and officially usher in the Lance era in Santa Clara. The team traded a lot of draft capital to move up last year to select Lance with the No. 3 overall pick, leaving the 49ers without a first-round pick until 2024.

"If [Garoppolo] does [leave], he deserves to go to a great situation, so I think they're going to make sure they do get that done if Jimmy does leave," Lance said.

That would seemingly leave Lance, Garoppolo's backup in 2021, as the starter moving forward.

"That's the plan. That's the plan," Lance added. "That's my plan."

Lance believes there's enough talent on the roster to maintain the team's competitiveness, earlier today admitting that there will be "ups and downs," and he's not "expecting to be perfect" in his first season as a starter.

However, the young quarterback is excited about the possibilities.

"I've got a lot of guys around me to make a lot of plays," Lance said. "I mean, from top to bottom, the receiving room, running back room, wide back Deebo room, we've got some weapons, some special guys. So for me, it's going to be [about] finding ways to get those guys the ball as efficient[ly] as I can."

Lance added that he's looking forward to sitting down with Kyle Shanahan this offseason and studying film, better understand how his head coach sees the game, and make sure they are on the same page.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance played two drives during Friday's 28-21 preseason win over the Green Bay Packers. This week, head coach Kyle Shanahan said the plan for Lance was to play in Week 1 and Week 3 of the preseason schedule, skipping the August 20 game against the Minnesota Vikings. For now, that "most likely" remains the plan, Shanahan told reporters after Friday night's game. That could change based on how next week goes, though. The 49ers will hold joint practices with the Vikings at the TCO Performance Center in Eagan, Minnesota. "We'll see how it goes, but I'm a lot more into the Wednesday and Thursday practice than the game on

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has had a chance to watch the film from Friday night's 28-21 preseason win over the Green Bay Packers. It was an opportunity for a lot of young players to shine. But, more importantly, it was a chance for them to gain valuable experience. Second-year quarterback Trey Lance, the team's starter, finished the night 4-of-5 for 92 yards, a touchdown, and a perfect passer rating of 158.3. He was among the highest-graded 49ers players by Pro Football Focus. After reviewing the film, Shanahan said that his evaluation of the 22-year-old quarterback isn't much different from what he said last night. "He did a

Not everything was perfect for the San Francisco 49ers in their 28-21 win over the Green Bay Packers on Friday night, but there's no doubt the vibe coming out of the win was mostly positive. Trey Lance and the other 49ers quarterbacks played well in the win, going a combined 15-of-22 for 212 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. A number of rookie players got extended reps, and several of them did a fine job with their opportunities. Following the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan talked about those issues and more, while Lance, rookie cornerback Samuel Womack and wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud were among those to meet with reporters. Here's a rundown of some of the key issues discussed, including what Shanahan thinks of Womack's performance to this point,

The San Francisco 49ers are in Eagan, Minnesota for a couple of joint practices with the Vikings, before the preseason game on Saturday. The starters will likely not play in the Saturday game, which makes the two practices all the more valuable. Let's open up the 49ers Webzone mailbag and see if we can answer some of your questions.
