49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo expected to have surgery after the season, per Rapoport

Jan 2, 2022 at 9:52 AM--

"I've been told he does not need surgery right now."

That's what San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Wednesday while discussing his injured quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo. The key words in that statement might be "right now."

Garoppolo is not expected to play on Sunday afternoon when the 49ers host the Houston Texans at Levi's Stadium. On Saturday night, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the team is "optimistic" Garoppolo could return for the regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Rams. The quarterback is dealing with a torn ligament and chipped bone in his right thumb.

While surgery is not required right now, NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reports that it might be needed once the season is over, with the NFL insider calling the thumb injury "a significant one."

"In fact, sources say that Garoppolo is expected to have surgery following the season to repair the torn ligament and chipped bone in the thumb on his throwing hand," wrote Rapoport. "In rare times, these types of injuries can heal on their own, but sources say this is not the type that can. He is expected to make a full recovery."

Garoppolo did not participate in any of the 49ers' four practices this week, giving all of the starter reps to rookie Trey Lance.

"A significant tear in the UCL in a quarterback's throwing thumb -- which Shanahan described as a Grade 3 sprain -- can essentially prevent a quarterback from gripping a football," Rapoport continued. "Throwing can be painful and difficult."

Lance is expected to make his second NFL start on Sunday, and his first since Week 5. The 49ers selected the quarterback with the No. 3 overall pick after trading several high draft picks to do so.

Rapoport added on-air, "There are some real questions about whether or not Garoppolo will be able to play if the 49ers win and keep going. They hope so, but it is not a certainty."

Rapoport: 49ers willing to hold onto Jimmy Garoppolo until cut-down day

By David Bonilla

Jimmy Garoppolo isn't practicing, but he is throwing next to his soon-to-be former San Francisco 49ers teammates. He looks healthy, too, according to one reporter. "I watched Jimmy Garoppolo make about 25 full-tilt throws to a junior staffer on a side field during the 49ers' training-camp practice Friday," wrote Tim Kawakami of The Athletic, "and there's no question he's close to 100 percent healed after his March shoulder surgery and one of the top 32 QBs in the league right now. Maybe it's a shorter list than 32." The quarterback is cleared to do whatever he needs within the restrictions of his rehabilitation from that March 8 procedure. He has full

Rapoport: 49ers' talent can carry Trey Lance through 'up and down' season

The San Francisco 49ers are off today. The team returns to the practice field tomorrow. Anyone that follows the team even somewhat closely knows that second-year quarterback Trey Lance has had an up and down training camp. That was to be expected. This offseason is his first taking the majority of the quarterback snaps. Plus, Lance is going against what many expect to be one of this season's top defenses and has had starters in and out of the offense while doing so. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport joined the PatMcAfee Show and shared what he's heard about and witnessed from last year's No. 3 overall pick. While none of it is new information, Rapoport still discussed Lance's "up and down" training camp. McAfee hilariously expressed shock as if the report

For months, San Francisco 49ers fans have been awaiting closure surrounding the quarterback situation with Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, and finally got some last week when head coach Kyle Shanahan declared that Lance was the guy moving forward at the position. Even more closure around Garoppolo could be on its way soon, as Marco Martinez of the "49ers RedZone" podcast confirmed to me on Thursday that the veteran quarterback's agent has indeed been in talks with the New York Giants, who have had themselves a bit of a quarterback dilemma after electing to bypass on Daniel Jones's fifth-year option and signing veteran Tyrod Taylor to a two-year deal in the offseason. Remember, Garoppolo currently has one year and $24.2 million left on his contract, but it's
