49ers protect 3 from practice squad, work out 2 punters with Mitch Wishnowsky on the COVID list

Dec 28, 2021 at 2:39 PM--

According to the NFL transaction wire, the San Francisco 49ers protected the following three practice squad players ahead of Sunday's game against the Houston Texans.

San Francisco worked out the following players:

  • QB Tyler Bray
  • P Jimmy Smith
  • P Colby Wadman

The then-Oakland Raiders signed Wadman as an undrafted free agent out of UC Davis in 2018. He spent two seasons (2018-19) with the Denver Broncos. Tennessee made Smith an undrafted free agent signing out of Cincinnati, and he spent camp with the Titans.

The 49ers could be without their punter, Mitch Wishnowsky, for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans. On Monday, the team placed him on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked if Wishnowsky's status means he would miss the Week 17 matchup.

"No, those protocols to get back have eased up a little bit," Shanahan responded. "I'm not sure exactly how, but I still believe he has got to get two negative tests, I believe. And it depends on where his symptoms are, so we'll hold out hope that he'll be able to punt for us on Sunday and kickoff, and if not, we'll have someone else in here."

Linebacker Tyrell Adams terminated his practice-squad contract.

The San Francisco 49ers added a veteran Pro Bowl cornerback today ... to the practice squad. The team signed former second-round draft pick Janoris Jenkins. During a conference call, head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about the timing of the signing. Jenkins, after all, has been available all season. So why now? "Because he was willing to do it," Shanahan responded. "I don't think that was the case all year. We've been in contact with him for a little bit, and he was willing to do it. I've always been a fan of Janoris. I know most people have. He's played at a very high level in this league. "To get a player who's been like that throughout his career to come to our practice squad, we felt pretty fortunate. I think he gets here today, possibly

The San Francisco 49ers have signed defensive lineman Kemoko Turay to the team's practice squad. To make room on the practice squad, the team released cornerback Ka'dar Hollman. Turay (6-5, 253) was waived by the team on November 26 after defensive lineman T.Y. McGill was promoted to the active roster. The 49ers initially signed Hollman (6-0, 196) to the practice squad on October

49ers-Saints: Armstead returns to practice; Samuel working on side field

By David Bonilla
Nov 25

San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Arik Armstead returned to practice on Friday. He has not played since Week 4 due to foot and ankle injuries. Jordan Schultz of The Score was the first to return Armstead's return to the practice field. Don't expect Armstead to be suited up for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints, though. Schultz notes that the 49ers have ruled out the veteran defender for this weekend's game. However, his return to practice means that his return to the football field could be soon. #49ers
