49ers sign two to the practice squad, announce other moves

The San Francisco 49ers announced the following practice squad moves ahead of Sunday's Week 13 clash with the Seattle Seahawks.

  • LB Justin March and S Doug Middleton were signed to the practice squad
  • WR Devin Funchess was placed on the practice squad injured reserve list
  • S Kai Nacua has been released from the practice squad

The 49ers Communications staff provided the following rundown.



March (6-0, 222) originally entered the NFL after signing with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent on May 11, 2015. Throughout his six-year career with the Chiefs (2015-16), Miami Dolphins (2017), Seattle Seahawks (2017), and Dallas Cowboys (2017-20), he has appeared in 59 games (five starts) and registered 29 tackles and three passes defensed. March was signed by the Tennessee Titans on May 6, 2021. He was placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury List on August 26 and was later released on September 6.

A 28-year-old native of Danville, IL, March attended the University of Akron, where he appeared in 46 games (35 starts) and finished with 250 tackles, 14 passes defensed, four interceptions, and 3.5 sacks.

Middleton (6-0, 210) originally entered the NFL after signing with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent on May 6, 2016. Throughout his five-year career with the Jets (2016-18), Miami Dolphins (2019), and Jacksonville Jaguars (2019-20), he has appeared in 24 games (four starts) and registered 28 tackles and four passes defensed. Middleton was signed by the Carolina Panthers on August 4, 2021. He was waived by the team on August 28, signed to the team's practice squad on October 13, and was released the following day.

A 28-year-old native of Winston-Salem, NC, Middleton attended Appalachian State University, where he appeared in 60 games (32 starts) and finished with 201 tackles, six interceptions, and 1.0 sack.

49ers announce team has re-signed Chris Conley

The San Francisco 49ers announced today that the team has re-signed WR Chris Conley to a one-year deal. Conley spent 2023 with the 49ers but only appeared in eight games. He finished the regular season with three receptions for 69 yards. But Conley saved his best for the postseason. Although he only had two receptions for 35 yards, his catches came in big moments. In the Divisional Playoff Game against the Green Bay Packers, with the 49ers trailing 21-17, Conley brought in a 17-yard catch that moved the ball to Green Bay's 26-yard line. The 49ers scored the winning touchdown on the drive. Then in Super Bowl LVIII, Conley hauled in an 18-yard reception in the first quarter to help set up a Jake Moody field goal. But perhaps Conely's biggest plays in the Super Bowl

49ers signing safety George Odum to a two-year extension

NFL Media's Tom Pelissero reports that, according to the player's agent, the San Francisco 49ers are signing safety and special teams contributor George Odum to a two-year, $10 million extension that could reach $10.8 million. Initially signed through the 2024 season, this extension will keep him under contract through 2026. The #49ers and special teams ace George Odum have agreed to a two-year extension worth up to $10 million, per his agent Matt Glose. The deal puts Odum at the top of the core special teams market.
