NFL Week 8: 49ers vs. Bears live updates

4th Quarter

GAME ALERT: The 49ers defeat the Bears 33-22, snapping their four game losing streak and moving them to 3-4 on the season. They face the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9, with George Kittle potentially available to return from injury.

TURNOVER ALERT: Josh Norman intercepts Justin Fields on a tip-drill, as the ball was just off the fingertips of Bears WR Darnell Mooney, sealing the game for the 49ers.

SCORE ALERT: Joey Slye drills the 32-yard field goal, giving the 49ers a 33-22 lead with 1:56 remaining in the 4th quarter.

On 2nd & 11, Mitchell breaks to the outside again, this time gaining 12 yards, setting up a 1st down at the CHI 13, and forcing Chicago to continue burning timeouts.

Elijah Mitchell continues his dominant afternoon, gaining 39 yards on the first play of San Francisco's drive, setting up a 1st down at the CHI 24.

SACK ALERT: On 3rd & 10, Samson Ebukam gets to the quarterback and is able to wrap up Justin Fields for a 14-yard loss, forcing a punt.

INJURY UPDATE: With Jimmie Ward nursing a quad injury, safety Tavon Wilson has entered the game.

INJURY UPDATE: Khalil Herbert has also returned to the game after heading to the locker room earlier.

INJURY UPDATE: After being evaluated for a concussion, Fred Warner has been cleared and is good to return for Sunday's game.

With that Garoppolo rushing touchdown, the 49ers have now scored 30 points in game for the first time since scoring 41 against the Detroit Lions in Week 1.

Elijah Mitchell follows the 19-yard pass with a 27-yard gain to the outside, setting up the 49ers at the CHI 29 already.

To start the 49ers drive, a calm and collected Jimmy Garoppolo progresses through his reads and finds a cutting Sanu over the middle for 19 yards.

SCORE ALERT: Justin Fields evades multiple 49ers pursuers and embarrasses the 49ers en route to a 22-yard touchdown scramble on 4th & 1 to get the Bears to within 1. Cairo Santos misses the extra point, keeping the score at 23-22 San Francisco, with 9:32 remaining in the game.

On the next play from scrimmage, Justin Fields completes a pass to Marquise Goodwin, but Josh Norman hits the ball out before Goodwin's down. Luckily for Chicago, Ryan Nall falls on the football to keep possession with the Bears.

On 1st & 10, Justin Fields faces heavy pressure and is sacked from behind by the safety-turned-linebacker Marcell Harris for a one-yard loss.

SCORE ALERT: Elijah Mitchell pushes through, with help from the offensive line, and scores the 5-yard touchdown to give the 49ers the lead. A Jimmy Garoppolo completion to Brandon Aiyuk converts the 2-point conversion, and the 49ers now lead 23-16 with 14:11 left in the 4th quarter.

On the 1st play of the 4th quarter, Elijah Mitchell makes a nice cut to the outside and bursts through for a 1st & Goal at the CHI 5.

3rd Quarter

QUARTER ALERT: At the end of the 3rd quarter, San Francisco trails 16-15, but has the ball at the CHI 16 with the chance to take the lead early in the 4th.

Jimmy Garoppolo has found a rhythm on this drive, completing passes to Charlie Woerner for 7 yards and Kyle Juszczyk for 11 yards to set up a 1st down at the CHI 16.

With his sixth catch of the game, Deebo Samuel has passed Jerry Rice for the most 49er receiving yards through the first seven games of a season, as he now has 819 yards on the year. Rice's record in 1986 was 781 yards

Off of play-action, Jimmy Garoppolo looks downfield and finds Deebo Samuel yet again for a 15-yard gain and a 1st down at the CHI 37. Samuel now has six catches for 171 yards on the day.

After a Nick Bosa sack, the 49ers force the first punt of the game and a good Aiyuk return puts the 49ers in good position to take the lead.

INJURY ALERT: Bears RB Khalil Herbert is down on the field after taking a hit following the dropped pitch. He is heading to the locker room.

After an encouraging start with two first downs, the 49ers catch a break on a dropped pitch by Khalil Herbert, losing the Bears five yards on the play.

SCORE ALERT: On 3rd & Goal, Jimmy Garoppolo rushes it in from the 2-yard line for the touchdown, but Joey Slye misses the extra point as Chicago still leads 16-15.

Being stuck on a 3rd & 19, Jimmy Garoppolo connects with Deebo Samuel on a screen pass for a 83-yard gain, which was overturned from a touchdown as Samuel was out of bounds shy of the goal line.

SCORE ALERT: The 49ers are able to hold the Bears to a field goal as Cairo Santos connects with the 25-yard field goal on 4th & Goal to give the Bears a 16-9 lead. Despite the Bears primarily dominating on offense, the 49ers still have the chance to tie things up here.

On 3rd & 8 at the SF 14, Justin Fields somehow evades the 49er pressure, with multiple missed tackles, and a Josh Norman holding penalty gifts the Bears a free set of downs at the SF 4.

On 3rd & 13 at the SF 38, Justin Fields delivers a quick tight-window throw for 22 yards and a 1st down.

On the first play of the second half, Justin Fields delivers an impressive touch throw off the bootleg to Jesse James, getting Chicago to SF 50 almost instantly.

At the half, Jimmy Garoppolo is 10/19 for 163 yards, as the 49ers have elected to pass 19 times, as opposed to rushing only eight times. In a high-pressure game, Jimmy Garoppolo has kept the 49ers within scoring distance.

2nd Quarter

SCORE/QUARTER ALERT: After a missed short throw by Jimmy Garoppolo to Deebo Samuel, the 49ers settle for a field goal, as Joey Slye's 22-yard field goal brings the game to 13-9 Chicago, with the Bears getting the 2nd half kickoff.

Jimmy Garoppolo delivers a deep 5-yard shot perfectly placed to Deebo Samuel and rushes down to spike the ball at the CHI 4 with seven seconds remained.

Brandon Aiyuk is targeted three straight times, picking up a 6-yard and a 15-yard gain to give the 49ers a 1st down at the SF 46 with 25 seconds remaining in the half.

SCORE ALERT: Cairo Santos drills a 40-yard field goal to put the Bears up 13-6, capping off a 16-play, 57-yard drive with 1:16 remaining in the 4th quarter.

K'Waun Williams gets in the backfield to stuff Khalil Herbert for a six-yard loss and force a field goal attempt, giving the 49ers a chance to score after Kyle Shanahan called his first timeout.

QUARTER ALERT: At the 2-minute warning, the Chicago Bears are at the SF 18 on 2nd & 8, as they aim to score one more time before the half. Chicago will receive the second-half kickoff as well.

Nick Bosa finally gets to the quarterback, sacking Justin Fields for an 11-yard loss on first down despite being held in the process, taking the Bears out of field goal range.

On 1st & 10 at the CHI 44, Justin Fields showcases that 4.4 speed, bursting through for a 16-yard pickup, moving the chains.

On 2nd & 8, Fred Warner makes an impressive play on a ball intended for Darnell Mooney, breaking up the pass and setting up 3rd & long. The 49ers have yet to really get significant pressure on the rookie quarterback thus far.

SCORE ALERT: On 3rd & 7, Mohammed Sanu drops a would-be first down, forcing the 49ers to settle for a Joey Slye 52-yard field goal, cutting the Bears lead to 10-6 with 9:33 remaining in the 2nd quarter.

Right after the scrambling throw to Aiyuk, Garoppolo stays strong in the pocket and fires off his back foot over the middle to Deebo Samuel for a 16-yard gain to the CHI 37.

Jimmy Garoppolo continues to be mobile, this time evading the pressure and hitting Brandon Aiyuk coming from the middle for a 1st-down on a 23-yard gain.

SCORE ALERT: QB Justin Fields scrambles to his left and fires a cross-body throw to a diving Jesse James in the endzone to make it 10-3 Chicago early in the 2nd quarter.

The Bears continue to push the ball deep into SF territory as a good combination of passes and runs have led Chicago down to the SF 11 for a 1st down.

INJURY ALERT: Bears RB Damien Williams, who had a bout of COVID-19 earlier this season, is headed to the locker room, and is questionable with a knee injury.

1st Quarter

QUARTER ALERT: At the end of the first quarter, the 49ers and the Bears are tied 3-3 as Chicago has a 2nd & 7 at the SF 38, looking to attack and score once again.

A costly offsides penalty by Arik Armstead gives Justin Fields and this Chicago offense a very manageable 3rd & 4, which they convert.

SCORE ALERT: After a couple of explosive plays, Joey Slye drills a field-goal from 48 yards out to tie this game at 3-3 with 2:51 left in the 1st quarter.

On the first play of San Francisco's second drive, Elijah Mitchell uses the outside for a 27-yard gain to the CHI 48, moving the chains quickly.

INJURY ALERT: Bears safety Eddie Jackson is QUESTIONABLE to return with a hamstring injury.

SCORE ALERT: Cairo Santos drills a 39-yard field goal to put the Bears ahead 3-0 in the 1st quarter after a few offensive penalties derailed their promising drive.

On Chicago's first drive, they've began by moving the ball well through a variety of both runs and passes, as Justin Fields finds Darnell Mooney for a 14-yard pickup on 3rd & 7, and Khalil Herbert explodes for a 22-yard pickup to bring the Bears well into SF territory.

After a Trent Williams hold, Jimmy Garoppolo scrambles around the pocket on 3rd & 23 before firing to Mohammed Sanu over the middle for 19 yards to set up a 48-yard Joe Slye field-goal, which he shanks to the right. The score remains 0-0 with 9:48 remaining in the game.

On 2nd & 13, the wide receiver drop problems continue, as Deebo Samuel lets a ball slip through his hands, setting up 3rd & long yet again.

On 4th & 1, the 49ers utilize a quick snap, as JaMycal Hasty is able to get the needed yard and move the 49ers forward to the CHI 35.

The 49ers began this game passing on the first three downs, shifting away from their regular pound-the-rock strategy, which is a good sign for head coach Kyle Shanahan's confidence in starter Jimmy Garoppolo.

On 3rd & 10, Jimmy Garoppolo fires to Mohammed Sanu for 21 yards to the CHI 46, setting up a first down. 3rd-down conversions were a problem last week, so it's a good sign to start this game, especially on 3rd & long.

The 49ers will begin with the football to start off Week 8's early start in Chicago as Jimmy Garoppolo and the offense look to move the football off the jump against this Bears defense.

Pregame

One notable name isn't on this list: T Trent Williams, who is active for today's game after being questionable with ankle and elbow injuries.

The 49ers have listed their seven inactives for the game: CB Deommodore Lenoir, DE Dee Ford, OL Aaron Banks, LB Azeez Al-Shaair, DL Maurice Hurst, CB Ambry Thomas, and WR Travis Benjamin.

The notable name is obviously Khalil Mack, who the Bears ruled out earlier this week with a foot injury. On the other hands, defensive tackle Akiem Hicks is active for Sunday's matchup.

The Bears have listed their five inactives for the game: LB Khalil Mack, QB Nick Foles, WR Breshad Perriman, LB Caleb Johnson, and DB Artie Burns.
