49ers-Colts Injury Report: Jimmy Garoppolo limited; Trey Lance remains sidelined

Oct 20, 2021 at 3:21 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 7 contest against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Jimmy Garoppolo is attempting to return from a calf injury. This afternoon, head coach Kyle Shanahan said he is optimistic that his starting quarterback will be available on Sunday. However, he was less confident about backup Trey Lance's chances of being suited up against the Colts. He remains sidelined due to a knee sprain.

"We were hoping he could go this week," Shanahan said of Lance. "It doesn't look like it. He might have a chance at the end of the week, but I'd be surprised if he's not ready to go until next week."

The 49ers are still trying to manage defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw's knee injury, and are being cautious with offensive tackle Trent Williams.

Below are Wednesday's practice participation reports for both the 49ers and Colts, which were provided by the 49ers Communications staff.

Breer: Jimmy Garoppolo's 49ers fate dependent on Trey Lance's offseason development

By David Bonilla
May 15

Jimmy Garoppolo has remained on the San Francisco 49ers roster far longer than anyone expected or predicted. The Niners have tried to trade the veteran, clearing the way for second-year quarterback Trey Lance. However, offseason shoulder surgery halted trade discussions, and the 49ers, for now, appear stuck with Garoppolo and his hefty salary. The 49ers have maintained that they are comfortable holding onto Garoppolo if they cannot strike a deal to their liking. Everyone realizes, though, that Plan A is to trade the quarterback for something worthwhile rather than letting him fulfill his contract on the team and leave as a free agent in 2023. Releasing Garoppolo would also net them nothing, aside from salary cap space. Holding onto Garoppolo might happen. Most of

49ers keeping Jimmy Garoppolo while starting Trey Lance wouldn't surprise Peter King

Will the San Francisco 49ers be able to offload quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to another team? They've certainly expressed a desire to do so. However, Garoppolo remains on the roster after undergoing shoulder surgery on March 8, which sent his stock tumbling. No one seems eager to trade for an injured quarterback who can't throw until late next month, at the earliest. The 49ers have repeatedly stated they are willing to hold onto Garoppolo and his hefty salary if they can't trade him. They aren't going to give him away for free by releasing him. That might mean a team like the division rival Seattle Seahawks scooping him up. Garoppolo is undoubtedly an upgrade over anyone currently in place for the spiraling Seahawks. San Francisco is unlikely to do their NFC West nemesis any

NFL analyst believes Jimmy Garoppolo starts for 49ers after hearing more about Trey Lance doubt

Ryan Harris, a former offensive lineman turned broadcaster and analyst, joined CBS Sports HQ to discuss the young quarterbacks of the San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears. He was asked which passer—Trey Lance or Justin Fields—finds himself in the best situation. Harris' answer? Lance, who is on a roster coming off an NFC title game appearance. However, there is one caveat to that answer. "But I'm here to tell you, after people I've talked to, everyone I've spoken to expected Jimmy Garoppolo to start [Week 1 against the Bears]," Harris said. There has been an offseason narrative that Trey Lance is not yet ready to step into the starting role for a team built to win now. Of course, those who follow the 49ers closely realize that if that

George Kittle impressed by Trey Lance's progress, says 49ers QB benefitted from Jimmy Garoppolo

It isn't easy to speculate on the development of Trey Lance during practices. Most of those criticizing the young quarterback were not watching him every day. One player who did watch Lance every day is his San Francisco 49ers teammate, George Kittle. The All-Pro tight end loves what he has seen from the now-22-year-old quarterback. Lance is expected to be the 49ers' starter come Week 1 of the upcoming season. However, the starter of the past four-and-a-half seasons, Jimmy Garoppolo, remains on the roster. Garoppolo is recovering from the shoulder surgery he underwent on March 8, so the 49ers can't trade the veteran quarterback until he is medically cleared to throw again. Kittle joined The Pat McAfee Show on Friday and was asked if Garoppolo remaining
