What Kyle Shanahan said about 49ers’ interest in Stephon Gilmore
Were the San Francisco 49ers interested in former New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore? Maybe. Maybe not. Head coach Kyle Shanahan didn't make that clear while speaking with reporters before today's practice. Not that anyone thought he would.
What the coach did say is that the 49ers at least look into the possibility of acquiring Gilmore.
"We looked into all of it," Shanahan told reporters. "We obviously didn't go through with it."
While initial reports stated that the Patriots were planning to release Gilmore due to a contract dispute, New England ended up trading the Pro Bowl and All-Pro cornerback to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a 2023 sixth-round draft pick. It was a modest price for one of the league's top defenders.
With Gilmore seeking a bigger contract, the Niners may have felt that adding the cornerback would be too costly. There is also the fact that Gilmore underwent quad surgery in December, and the team may be hesitant to commit a lot of money to another player coming off an injury.

Obviously, you had a big change at right tackle with Denver Broncos T Mike McGlinchey leaving this off season, what is your confidence level in OL Colton McKivitz and where does that kind of stem from?
"Colton, he's done a great job for us through the years he's been here. He's always had to fill in short spells and has done a good job for
What 49ers coach Brian Griese said about Brock Purdy, Trey Lance, and Sam Darnold
After last season, Brian Griese took some time to reflect on his first season as a quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers. He left a 13-season career as a television analyst to join head coach Kyle Shanahan's staff.
Ultimately, the coach decided that the job was fulfilling and opted to return for another season.
"This is an opportunity for me to embrace a new challenge in my life at this point in the journey, and I really appreciate that," Griese told reporters on Thursday. "I appreciate the opportunity. I think there are some experiences and unique skill sets that I have that can help, and I just love being a part of a team and competing and winning and
What 49ers coach Kris Kocurek said about Drake Jackson, Javon Hargrave, Javon Kinlaw
Drake Jackson looks better prepared for his sophomore NFL season, both physically and mentally. The San Francisco 49ers defensive end spoke with reporters this week, and reports of his added bulk were visually confirmed. He estimates he has gained about 13 pounds since last season, and the work continues.
His defensive line coach, Kris Kocurek, believes the added weight and better preparation will help Jackson last through the rigors of an NFL season. The coach has seen "significant strength gain" in his young defender.
Jackson was inactive for six of the 49ers' final eight games last season, including each of the team's three playoff contests. Being forced to watch from
Kyle Shanahan feels "really fortunate" with 49ers' QB room
Kyle Shanahan praises his quarterback room every year. Last season, the San Francisco 49ers went through three starting quarterbacks and still made it to the NFC Championship Game. Trey Lance was the Week 1 starter but suffered a season-ending ankle injury during his second game. Eleven weeks later, Jimmy Garoppolo sustained a broken foot.
That opened the door for rookie Brock Purdy to show his coaches and the NFL world that he belonged, despite being the last overall pick in the draft. Purdy guided the 49ers to eight consecutive wins before suffering a severe injury in that NFC title game matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Two of the quarterbacks from last season—Lance and Purdy—remain. Both are just 23 years old. They are joined by Sam
