49ers signing kicker Joey Slye as Robbie Gould deals with injury

Oct 5, 2021 at 1:38 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers are signing kicker Joey Slye, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. He will replace Robbie Gould, who is expected to miss three to five weeks due to a groin injury. Slye is one of several kickers who worked out for the 49ers this morning.

The New York Giants signed Slye (5-11, 213) as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia Tech in 2018. He made four-of-five field goal attempts and seven-of-eight extra-point attempts through three games with the Houston Texans this season before being waived on September 30.

Slye, 25, has made 58-of-73 field goal attempts (79.5 percent) in 35 game appearances through his three NFL seasons, which included a two-year stint (2019-20) with the Carolina Panthers.

The veteran passer will not practice today during the team's first of three practices this week. The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 5 contest against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Today's practice report looked very much like what head coach Kyle Shanahan previewed beforehand. There was no Jimmy Garoppolo, as the quarterback continues to recover from a calf injury. "I mean, it could go up to game time," Garoppolo said before practice about Sunday's game status. "We've done it before up to game time. And it's really just about getting the mental reps while I can out there today, see where I'm at tomorrow and everything." There was no Trent Williams, who, like Garoppolo, was injured this past weekend against the Seattle Seahawks. San Francisco continues to be cautious
