49ers-Packers: Elijah Mitchell’s injury ‘a little worse’ than thought but he could play Sunday, says Kyle Shanahan

Sep 22, 2021 at 1:03 PM--

Before today's practice, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters and shared several injury updates. First, he confirmed that defensive lineman Kevin Givens (ankle) and running back JaMycal Hasty (ankle), who the coach previously said would be out "a while," will both head to injured reserve.

Running back Elijah Mitchell was also injured during the team's Week 2 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Shanahan initially hoped his shoulder injury was just a stinger but told reporters today that it was a bit worse without revealing the specifics of the injury.

"Elijah Mitchell has a shoulder, will not practice," Shanahan said. "... A little worse than a stinger, so that's why he can't go today. He's got a chance at Sunday."

Defensive lineman Arik Armstead (abductor) also will not practice. Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley (knee) and defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw (knee) will be limited.

Shanahan said that running back Trey Sermon is "on a good path" in his recovery after suffering a concussion against the Eagles. However, he remains in the concussion protocol and is among the players who will be limited today.

Shanahan added that cornerback Josh Norman (ankle) is full-go for practice.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan joined KNBR this morning and provided an update on his starting quarterback. No, not rookie Trey Lance. Jimmy Garoppolo. If healthy, Garoppolo is expected to be the Week 7 starter against the Indianapolis Colts. Lance may not even be available for that game. The rookie quarterback suffered a knee sprain during his first start this past weekend. The injury could keep him out for one or two weeks. Garoppolo is attempting to return from the calf injury sustained on October 3. It sounds like the 49ers are optimistic about his recovery. "I mean, he's doing good," Shanahan said on the Murph &

Kyle Shanahan breaks down the 49ers' play that saw Trey Lance stopped at the goal line vs. Cardinals

Rookie quarterback Trey Lance made his NFL debut Sunday and the day came with its ups-and-downs, as the 49ers failed to execute on offense, leading to a 17-10 loss against the Arizona Cardinals. Lance was featured heavily, as he threw 29 passes and ran the ball 16 times for 89 yards, which was questionable, given the amount of contact he faced in the game. One of those controversial plays came on 4th & Goal at the ARI 1 in the second quarter, with the 49ers looking to score a touchdown down 7-0. Running play-action, Lance faked the handoff to Elijah Mitchell and rolled to his right, electing to try and run for the score rather than passing the ball once his first read, the halfback, wasn't available. He was met by two Arizona linebackers, Isaiah

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters before today's practice. He informed the media that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo would be practicing but be limited. Rookie Trey Lance won't practice as he continues to recover from his injury. "It will be good to go out there and be full-go today," Shanahan said of Garoppolo. "I know he's limited because we've got to make sure he can do everything. We'll have a much better idea today, but I'm pretty optimistic about it." Garoppolo is returning from a calf injury suffered in a game against the Seattle Seahawks on October 3. Lance replaced the veteran quarterback in the game and then started the following weekend against the Arizona Cardinals, sustaining a knee sprain. The rookie quarterback's

Kyle Shanahan says 'nothing's changed' with 49ers' QB situation, hopes Jimmy Garoppolo gets healthy, responds to Rapoport report

Kyle Shanahan is hopeful that his quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, recovers enough from his calf injury to be available after the bye week. It sounds like the quarterback will have an opportunity to return as the starter for Week 7's matchup against the Indianapolis Colts after Trey Lance started in his place this weekend. Shanahan spoke with reporters after today's 17-10 defeat at State Farm Stadium. He was asked if anything has changed regarding the team's quarterback situation. On Friday, the coach declared that Garoppolo would have been the Week 5 starter had the quarterback been healthy. "No, nothing's changed," Shanahan told reporters. "That was just one game. It was a tough loss right there, and I'm going to talk to our whole team tomorrow and think about how
