Kyle Shanahan provides injury updates following 49ers-Lions, fears ACL injury for Jason Verrett

Sep 12, 2021 at 1:48 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers escaped with a 41-33 Week 1 victory over the Detroit Lions. However, the win came at a cost when it comes to the health of the team. Starting cornerback Jason Verrett reportedly suffered a torn ACL, ending his season. That's a devastating blow to the 49ers' pass defense.

After the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that the team is worried that Verrett indeed suffered a torn ACL.

"It's crushing," the coach said. "I'm hoping for the best, but it's crushing. You know the bad luck he's had, and putting together these last two years, staying healthy, how good of a camp he had. We've got a lot of love for J.V. and respect him as much as anyone I've ever been around, so I really hurt for him."

Shanahan added that recently-signed veteran Josh Norman could be a possibility moving forward. He also hasn't eliminated the possibility of bringing back Richard Sherman or making a move for another cornerback.

The only other injuries Shanahan mentioned were to running back Raheem Mostert (knee) and linebacker Dre Greenlaw (groin). Neither returned to the game. Mostert's issue is not believed to be an ACL injury and the team will learn more after it arrives in West Virginia, where the 49ers will stay during the coming week before their Week 2 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The San Francisco 49ers are getting healthier. Kind of. There are still several missing pieces, like All-Pro tight end George Kittle. But some other pieces are scheduled to return soon. This week, the 49ers opened the practice window for running back JaMycal Hasty, who could be activated off injured reserve in time for this weekend's game against the Indianapolis Colts. Cornerback K'Waun Williams is practicing after missing the last two games due to a calf injury. "It's nice to get Hasty back this week," head coach Kyle Shanahan said on KNBR's Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show. "He helped us out a lot in those first two games with doing some third-down routes and things like that, and running the ball. "So, getting Hasty back should help

Today's practice will be very telling. Everyone wants to know which quarterback will head onto the field with the offense when the San Francisco 49ers take on the division-leading Arizona Cardinals on Sunday afternoon. Will it be Jimmy Garoppolo, or will the team go with the rookie, Trey Lance? Garoppolo sustained a calf injury during Week 4's loss to the Seattle Seahawks and has not practiced this week. The 49ers' final practice will be this afternoon, and Garoppolo told head coach Kyle Shanahan that he wants to "give it a go." "Jimmy is a tough competitor," general manager John Lynch said this morning on KNBR's Murph & Mac show. "And Jimmy was

George Kittle was not able to practice last week. Despite being listed as "doubtful," there remained hope that the San Francisco 49ers tight end might be able to play this past Sunday in rookie quarterback Trey Lance's first NFL start. "Everything's focused on this Sunday, and George is working his tail off to be there," general manager John Lynch said last week. "If not, it's nice that we do have a bye, and we're hopeful that time can allow him to heal enough to really lick this thing and put it behind us so he can get back in there at practice." Kittle won't return after the bye against the Indianapolis Colts. He won't return for the next game,

49ers' Kyle Shanahan discusses Trey Lance's injury, too many runs, seeks less Happy Gilmore

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan joined KNBR this morning, three days before his regularly scheduled appearance, thanks to the team breaking for its bye week this afternoon. Among the many discussion topics was his rookie quarterback, Trey Lance, who started his first NFL game this past weekend. The outcome wasn't what the 49ers hoped. The team lost its third consecutive game, this time against the Arizona Cardinals, and fell to 2-3. However, it was a good learning experience for the young quarterback. Unfortunately, Lance didn't emerge unscathed. The quarterback sustained a left knee sprain. The good news is that the injury doesn't appear
