First off, what answer would you expect from a San Francisco 49ers wide receiver being asked about his preferred quarterback? Of course, he's going to pick his current teammate over a former one. On Wednesday, that was the case when Trent Sherfield joined KNBR and was asked to choose between the throws from his Arizona Cardinals quarterback, Kyler Murray, and his new Niners quarterback, rookie Trey Lance.
"I'm going with my guy, Trey, all day long," Sherfield responded on the Papa & Lund show. "I'm going with my guy. He can sling the ball. No knock to Kyler, either. He's a freak. He's a very, very good football player, can definitely sling the rock. Trey can sling the rock as well.
"I really do think that Trey's ceiling is sky high, and I'm very, very excited to see how good of a player he's going to be because he's going to be [very good]. He has the focus. He has the detail. He has the work ethic—all those things.
"I'm very, very excited to continue to grow with him and this organization."
While some receivers are having trouble holding onto Lance's fastballs in games, Sherfield hasn't displayed much trouble doing so. The receiver is proving to be a reliable target for 49ers quarterbacks and a solid offseason pickup.
Sherfield says his time working with and learning from Larry Fitzgerald in Arizona helped his development.
"No matter who the ball is coming from, it's my job to catch it, and that's what I'm going to do," Sherfield shared. "Sometimes, those balls are coming out hot, and at the end of the day, nobody cares how hot it is. You've got to catch it."
