49ers injury updates: Aaron Banks out 2-3 weeks, Austin Watkins breaks foot, says Kyle Shanahan

Aug 15, 2021 at 2:25 PM--

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters via a conference call on Sunday and provided several injury updates following yesterday's preseason loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

While rookie offensive lineman Aaron Banks is expected to miss two to three weeks with a shoulder injury, the most significant injury—at least in terms of severity—might be the loss of wide receiver Austin Watkins Jr.

"Watkins, he has a broken foot. He's going to be out six to eight weeks," Shanahan said. "... We think he did it early in the game because that's what he ended up telling us after. So, got a lot of respect for him for trying to play through that and stuff. I wish he would have told us a little bit earlier.

"I don't know if he knew it was broken or not, but you could see him on tape limping a little bit through that two-minute drive. Then when he got it checked after the game, [it showed him] having a broken bone, so it will be some time for him."

Shanahan also provided updates on several others who did not play last night.

"Guys that we plan on returning for practice tomorrow, hoping to get Azeez (Al-Shaair) back, (Demetrius) Flannigan-Fowles, Samson (Ebukam), (MyCole) Pruitt, and K'Waun (Williams)," the coach said.

A lot is riding on the selection of Trey Lance. The future of the San Francisco 49ers — and likely head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch — depends on the rookie quarterback developing into an impact player. The NFL Draft has seemingly been a crapshoot for the Niners. For every Nick Bosa, there is a Solomon Thomas or Reuben Foster. There have been George Kittles and Fred Warners. However, selections like Dante Pettis severely impact evaluations of recent draft classes. The jury is still out on last year's first-rounders, Javon Kinlaw and Brandon Aiyuk. The latter's lack of involvement this season has been baffling. The 49ers have hit

Today, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters via a conference call. His team is coming off a 28-21 loss to the Seattle Seahawks and fell to 2-2 on the season. Shanahan provided several injury updates from the game. The most discussed injury was to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who could not start the second half, giving way to rookie Trey Lance. Shanahan said Garoppolo suffered a calf contusion and will be re-evaluated on Wednesday. However, the coach believes there is still a chance that Garoppolo will be available for this weekend's game against the Arizona Cardinals. RELATED: Shanahan says

Kyle Shanahan breaks down the 49ers' play that saw Trey Lance stopped at the goal line vs. Cardinals

Rookie quarterback Trey Lance made his NFL debut Sunday and the day came with its ups-and-downs, as the 49ers failed to execute on offense, leading to a 17-10 loss against the Arizona Cardinals. Lance was featured heavily, as he threw 29 passes and ran the ball 16 times for 89 yards, which was questionable, given the amount of contact he faced in the game. One of those controversial plays came on 4th & Goal at the ARI 1 in the second quarter, with the 49ers looking to score a touchdown down 7-0. Running play-action, Lance faked the handoff to Elijah Mitchell and rolled to his right, electing to try and run for the score rather than passing the ball once his first read, the halfback, wasn't available. He was met by two Arizona linebackers, Isaiah

49ers injury updates: Jimmy Garoppolo and Trent Williams won't practice today

Could rookie Trey Lance's first NFL start be on the horizon? San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters before today's practice and provided an update on starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The veteran passer will not practice today during the team's first of three practices this week. The 49ers coach added that Garoppolo has not been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals, though. "It's better today, which is good news," Shanahan said. "Not enough, though, to let him go [in practice], but also not enough to rule him out. The doctors still say [to] give him another day. He's got a chance [to play on Sunday], so we're still holding out for that." Added Shanahan: "We're just waiting for the swelling to go
