San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch revealed this weekend that we probably wouldn't see a whole lot—if any—of defensive end Nick Bosa during the preseason. However, the talented pass rusher remains on track to contribute in Week 1 when the 49ers face the Detroit Lions.
During Week 2 of last season, Bosa suffered an ACL injury, which ended his 2020 campaign.
After today's practice, head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked if he feels the 2019 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year remains on track for Week 1.
"I believe so," Shanahan responded. "I mean, that's been the plan all along. There's been no setbacks. He's doing great right now."
The question probably arose because Bosa has yet to participate in team drills and received today off from practice. However, Shanahan made it clear that it was just a maintenance day for the defender and is nothing to be concerned about. The team is taking a cautious approach to Bosa's return.
"I looked at the schedule (when it was released)," Bosa said last month, "but I knew when it was an early injury that I'd, for the most part, would probably be ready to go for Week 1, and everything right now is trending toward that. I'm hoping to ramp it up as I go and be ready to give it all I've got Week 1."
Shanahan shared that the absences of defensive backs Jimmie Ward and Jason Verrett from today's practice are also nothing to be concerned about. Both were given the day off.
"Jason, we gave him a vet day," Shanahan said. "And it's also his wife's getting induced, so he had to take off. Going down to be with her."
