Watch: Trey Lance continues his preparation for 49ers training camp

Jun 18, 2021 at 9:10 AM--

The videos keep coming. San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance has been working hard this offseason in preparation for training camp at the end of next month. The team concluded its offseason program last week, and now, it's up to each player to work on his own, stay in shape, and hone his skills before reconvening in Santa Clara on July 27.

Earlier this week, video surfaced of Lance working with teammate Mohamed Sanu. Then there was more video of Lance throwing to others while still working with Top Shelf Performance.

The latest video comes courtesy of quarterback coach Sean McEvoy. It was shared by Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

It sounds like Lance had a good offseason program. While Kyle Shanahan expects Jimmy Garoppolo to be the starting quarterback when Week 1 arrives, the head coach isn't closing the door on any possibilities. That could all depend on what happens in training camp.

San Francisco is playing Garoppolo a lot of money, though, assuming that he will be the starter and Lance will use his extra time as the backup to continue learning the offense.

"I definitely see it as Jimmy's the starter," Shanahan recently told Tim Kawakami of The Athletic. "But if Trey's ready to compete, I have no problem with it. I don't sit there and say, 'Hey, we're not playing a rookie quarterback. We have to rest him the first year.' I don't really make any decisions like that until I actually have an opinion on it. That'll take to how I see him in camp. If he comes in and he's playing at a high level and we think he gives us the best chance to win, we wouldn't hesitate to do that."

'This was never about this year': Rapoport says 49ers should not regret drafting Trey Lance over Mac Jones

By David Bonilla
Nov 15

Mac Jones is having an impressive rookie year. His New England Patriots have won four in a row and sit at 6-4. The rookie quarterback completed 82.6 percent of his passes and threw three touchdowns in a 45-7 rout of the Cleveland Browns over the weekend. Meanwhile, in Santa Clara, rookie Trey Lance, selected 12 spots ahead of Jones at No. 3 overall, hasn't received too many opportunities with the San Francisco 49ers. Of course, that was always the plan. Lance was drafted to eventually replace starter Jimmy Garoppolo, but use his rookie season to learn from the veteran quarterback and his coaches. Lance, after all, had limited experience at the collegiate level. Shanahan fell in love with Lance's potential. That's what made the 49ers trade to move up to select the

Kyle Shanahan says Trey Lance knows the entire 49ers playbook, explains rookie's absence vs. Rams

By David Bonilla

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance's last in-game snaps came in Week 5. He has been suited up and available the last three games, but head coach Kyle Shanahan has kept him sidelined. That's a departure from the sparing use of the dynamic quarterback earlier in the season. Shanahan was on a conference call with reporters today and was asked if Lance's absence was because of a decision to give Jimmy Garoppolo every snap moving forward. "No, I haven't made that decision," Shanahan responded. "The only time I did that, really, was Chicago week. Then Arizona, the game just didn't go the way we wanted. Going into this game, we didn't like a lot of the stuff in terms of what the Rams did, so we still had it up, but we didn't see it as changing the defense

Why Kyle Shanahan didn't give Trey Lance more playing time during 49ers-Jaguars

By Rohan Chakravarthi
Nov 22

During Sunday's victory against the Jaguars, 49ers quarterback Trey Lance got his first live snaps since his first NFL start in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals, although most of them were handoffs. While the game seemed out of reach for much of the fourth quarter, head coach Kyle Shanahan elected not to put his rookie into the game to gain some of that "game-time" experience that Shanahan alluded to last week. Lance trotted out for the first time in over a month during the 49ers last offensive series, in which he handed the ball off twice, rushed once, and kneeled twice to end the game. When asked about whether Shanahan had any thoughts

49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo believes Deebo Samuel made leap as a leader 'sometime in training camp'

By Rohan Chakravarthi

49ers receiver Deebo Samuel has made quite the stride in his third NFL season, as he's already caught 54 passes for 979 yards and seven total touchdowns through just nine games. Last year, Samuel had a mild sophomore season after an impressive rookie year due to a variety of hamstring injuries and a foot fracture, limiting the receiver to just seven games last season, in which he accumulated 33 receptions for 391 yards after a 57-catch, 802-yard rookie campaign. Deebo's rapport with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been made evident this year, best encapsulated by a specific play on Monday Night against the Rams in which the veteran quarterback trusted his receiver to make a play even before Samuel was
