According to the player's agent, the San Francisco 49ers are signing veteran linebacker James Burgess Jr. to a one-year deal.

The Miami Dolphins signed Burgess as an undrafted free agent out of Louisville in 2016. He registered three tackles through four games with the Green Bay Packers last season, per Pro Football Reference. His season ended by landing on injured reserve on November 25, 2020.

Before his season with Green Bay, the linebacker spent time with the Cleveland Browns and New York Jets. He also spent time on the practice squads of several other NFL teams.

Burgess, 27, has recorded 166 tackles, 21 tackles for a loss, eight quarterback hits, 4.5 sacks, a safety, eight passes defensed, an interception, and two forced fumbles through his four NFL seasons.

The signing may not become official until after June 1. Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters this week that center Weston Richburg will retire, which could be a corresponding roster move.

Schefter previously reported that the 49ers worked out former Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall on Thursday.

Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy. Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Former NFL player James Jones, now an analyst, expressed concern for Purdy should Aiyuk's tenure in the Bay Area come to an end. "I
