49ers WR Deebo Samuel ponders jersey number change

Apr 21, 2021 at 1:56 PM--

If you purchased a Deebo Samuel jersey, the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver might be preparing to make it outdated. Samuel suggested on Instagram that he is pondering a number change. Today, the NFL passed a proposal to loosen the restrictions on allowed numbers based on position. It sounds like Samuel is excited about the news.

Samuel wore No. 1 during his collegiate career at South Carolina and shared with fans that a jersey number change might be coming. He followed up the announcement with several photos of himself with the Gamecocks, asking fans, "How y'all feel about this?"

Fullback Kyle Juszczyk — likely jokingly — also gave the impression that he might at least consider a change.

We'll probably see several upcoming jersey number changes thanks to the rule change.

Add San Francisco 49ers cornerback Jason Verrett to the list of players changing their jersey numbers this offseason. On April 21, the NFL approved a proposal that relaxes the jersey number rules of certain position groups, opening the door for wide receivers, defensive backs, and some others to wear single-digit numbers. On Monday, safety Jaquiski Tartt revealed that he is switching from No. 29 to No. 26. Of course, that doesn't really fall into the rule change. Verrett, however, is switching from No. 22 to No. 2, the number he wore at TCU. It will be his second number change since joining the 49ers in 2019. His initial number was 27. Add San Francisco 49ers cornerback Emmanuel Moseley to the list of players who plan to don a different jersey number during the 2021 season. He is dropping a digit and moving from No. 41 to No. 4. "Had to cut 1 off but I'll never forget," Moseley wrote via Instagram (h/t to Patrick Tulini for the find). He will join his fellow defensive backs, Jaquiski Tartt and Jason Verrett, in changing numbers. Tartt is switching from No. 29 to No. 26. Verrett is moving from No. 22 to No.
