Falcons, Patriots, Broncos to join 49ers at Trey Lance’s second pro day

Apr 19, 2021 at 5:58 AM--

The San Francisco 49ers are practically running Trey Lance's second pro day, per a report on Sunday night from ESPN's Dan Graziano. Private quarterback coach John Beck, who remains close with Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan, has been working with the young quarterback for weeks at the request of San Francisco.

Beck worked with Shanahan for two seasons (2010-2011) when Beck was a quarterback with the Washington Football Team and Shanahan was the offensive coordinator there. That gives him great insight into what the Niners coach is looking for in a quarterback.

"I know how he's going to coach quarterbacks," Beck recently told The Athletic. "I know what he's looking for. So I think it's an easy extension of Kyle in terms of the eyes I have for quarterbacks."

Lance's second workout will take place today in Fargo, and the 49ers are sending Shanahan, general manager John Lynch, and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello. The team sent Beck a list of things it wants to see out of the former North Dakota State quarterback, which means much of the throwing session has been tailored by Shanahan.

According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots, and Denver Broncos will also be in attendance.

Lance held his first pro day on March 12. The 49ers were not in attendance. Of course, that was before the team traded four draft picks, including three first-rounders, to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for the No. 3 overall pick.

The pro day workout begins at 12:30 p.m. local time in Fargo, North Dakota, which is 10:30 p.m. Pacific. It will be closed to the media, meaning it also won't be televised.

Following his second pro day last week, Justin Fields of Ohio State saw a leap to the top spot as the betting favorite to land with the 49ers. We'll see if there is a similar move for Lance following today's workout.

Robert Griffin III makes pitch to join 49ers as a mentor for Trey Lance

Robert Griffin III is still looking for work after spending the past three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. The 31-year-old recently made a pitch to one team during Bleacher Report's draft show. He'd love to reunite with San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and work as a mentor for rookie quarterback Trey Lance. There's one problem, though. The Niners now have a pretty crowded quarterback room. Jimmy Garoppolo figures to be the team's starter. Lance will learn behind him until he is ready to take over the reins. The team also signed Nate Sudfeld this offseason, offering him a contract that signals he may be more than just a camp arm. San Francisco also has Josh

New San Francisco 49ers running back Trey Sermon was already familiar with at least one rookie teammate — quarterback Trey Lance. The two trained together, leading to the draft, and Sermon learned quickly how hard of a worker Lance is. "When I got that call (from the 49ers), I was excited," Sermon shared with reporters on Friday. "I was training with this guy back in Florida, and now we're going to be on the same team. It was definitely a good feeling." Sermon, Lance, and the rest of the 49ers rookies are taking part in a three-day minicamp this weekend. They were already hard at work learning Kyle Shanahan's playbook. The rookie minicamp will be their first opportunity to show the coaching staff how much they have absorbed. Sermon was asked

'He has a chance to be special': 49ers CEO Jed York asked Frank Gore to evaluate Trey Lance

By David Bonilla
May 1, 2021

San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York and Frank Gore remain close. The NFL running back spent his first 10 seasons with the Niners and York values his opinion. So, when San Francisco traded up to the No. 3 overall pick, York reached out to Gore to seek his opinion on Trey Lance of North Dakota State, the quarterback the 49ers would end up drafting on Thursday night. "Just take a look and let me know what you think," York said, per Jim Trotter NFL Media. York didn't hear back for weeks. That changed on Tuesday night, the day before general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan said they informed their boss, the man who signs
