Private coach John Beck, a former NFL quarterback who played for then-offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Washington, worked with quarterback Justin Fields of Ohio State this offseason. Beck remains close with Shanahan, and has been working with quarterback Trey Lance of North Dakota State in recent weeks.
That is no coincidence.
Fields and Lance are among the most likely prospects to be selected No. 3 overall by the San Francisco 49ers. ESPN's Dan Graziano reports that Lance has been working with Beck at the Niners' request.
San Francisco provided Beck with a list of drills it wanted to see from Lance, which means it was heavily involved in the planning of Monday's workout.
🧵 I am told the 49ers are extremely involved in the Trey Lance workout scheduled for Monday. Lance, who works with QB coach Quincy Avery, spent the past couple of weeks working with QB coach John Beck. Kyle Shanahan coached Beck in Washington a decade ago and trusts his opinion.

I'm told Lance went to work with Beck at Shanahan's request, and that the Niners' coaching staff gave Beck a list of drills they wanted Lance to work on ahead of Monday's workout. Effectively, the 49ers designed the workout and will have a hand in administering it.

Other teams, including the Atlanta Falcons, are also expected to be in attendance on Monday.
Other teams are expected to be in attendance, including the Falcons and Washington, per sources, but obviously Lance is under consideration for the 49ers at pick No. 3.

Worth noting, of course, that Beck also works with Justin Fields, who along with Mac Jones is also under consideration for the 49ers at pick No. 3.

"I know how he's going to coach quarterbacks," Beck recent said of Shanahan in an interview with The Athletic. "I know what he's looking for. So I think it's an easy extension of Kyle in terms of the eyes I have for quarterbacks."
San Francisco's heavy involvement in the planning of Lance's second pro day could indicate that the team is genuinely serious about the former Bison being an option for the No. 3 overall pick.
The 2021 NFL Draft begins on April 29 from Cleveland, Ohio.
