49ers held pre-draft meeting with Michigan RB Chris Evans, per report

Apr 14, 2021 at 1:44 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers are among several teams that have held pre-draft virtual meetings with former Michigan running back Chris Evans. The news was brought to us by Danish journalist Søren Hansen, who was the first to report the date of Justin Fields' second pro day.

"Michigan's RB Chris Evans has had zoom calls with the 49ers, Bengals, Patriots, Vikings, Giants and Chiefs," reads a translated tweet by Hansen. "Did not get much playing time in college and sat out in 2019, but is a great back and a good receiver who had a strong Pro Day. Interesting name for the bottom of the third day of the draft."

Evans (5-11, 211) carried the football 16 times for just 73 yards with a rushing touchdown while adding nine receptions for 160 yards with a receiving touchdown through six games as a senior in 2020, per Sports Reference. However, he had 1,722 rushing yards with 14 rushing touchdowns while adding 392 receiving yards and two more scores through the air in his first three seasons with the Wolverines.

The running back did not play in 2019 due to a suspension stemming from what was described as "academic issues." He was pegged to be Michigan's leading rusher that season.

Evans is from Indianapolis, Indiana. He earned a pre-draft grade of 5.84 from NFL.com, which equates to a "backup or special-teams player," per the site's 8-point grading scale.

According to assistant general manager Adam Peters, the San Francisco 49ers award a "gold helmet" designation to draft prospects who are "exemplary" in several areas, including leadership and intelligence. He told Matt Barrows of The Athletic that last year's fifth-round pick, offensive lineman Colton McKivitz, received the designation. Heading into a draft, only 15-20 prospects earn the "gold helmet." This year, the 49ers ended up drafting two players who earned the designation — quarterback Trey Lance, selected No. 3 overall, and safety Talanoa Hufanga, the last of three fifth-round

'They're awesome': Trey Lance discusses finally meeting Jimmy Garoppolo, other 49ers QBs

Trey Lance is all business. The rookie quarterback is focused on the job at hand with the San Francisco 49ers. Over the next three days, that will involve a rookie minicamp, his first foray to the NFL. Over the offseason and probably for much of his rookie year, Lance will get to know head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense as best he can. Lance is the quarterback of the future for the 49ers. However, he won't step into that QB1 role until he is ready, until he has a solid grasp of the offense, and can show he can execute it to near perfection. Jimmy Garoppolo is the leader in the quarterback room right now. It's a room that also consists of Nate Sudfeld, Josh Rosen, Josh Johnson, and now Lance. Lance spoke with reporters on Friday, after a team

According to Damond Talbot of NFL Draft Diamonds, the San Francisco 49ers are working out safety Blake Countess. The team kicks off a three-day rookie minicamp today, the perfect opportunity to look at potential additions to the roster. The Philadelphia Eagles made Countess a sixth-round selection out of Auburn in 2016. He transferred there from Michigan for his senior year. Countess, 27, registered three tackles through two games with the Eagles in 2020. It was the defender's third stint with the team. Countess was twice promoted from the Eagles' practice squad last season, appearing in the team's Week 15 and 17 games. He signed a reserve/futures contract on January 4, but was
