April Fools: George Kittle tries to prank 49ers fans with trade news

Apr 1, 2021 at 12:27 PM--

Trust nothing.

No, I am not talking about the pre-draft chatter that the San Francisco 49ers are locked in on Alabama quarterback Mac Jones with the No. 3 overall pick. Although, I tend not to trust pre-draft chatter either. I am talking about April Fools' Day.

Sorry, George Kittle. No one is falling for this one.

The 49ers' All-Pro tight end tweeted out the following, hoping to fool some gullible fans by suggesting that he had been traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He even included a mock-up of himself in his new uniform.

The Jaguars even responded.

Kittle, 27, did get some good news today, though. No foolin'. The tight end saw all of his $11.45 million base salary for 2022 become fully guaranteed. Before today, only about $6.4 million of next year's base salary was guaranteed.

The 49ers showed Kittle how important he is to the team's future by signing the tight end to a five-year, $75 million contract extension last August. While head coach Kyle Shanahan joked on Monday that general manager John Lynch might even consider trading him if the price was right, it is unlikely the team is eagerly seeking to unload its offensive cornerstone.

Kittle appeared in eight games last season, catching 48 passes for 634 yards with two touchdowns. That followed two consecutive seasons of recording over 1,000 yards receiving.

49ers TE George Kittle says Seahawks tried to trade up to draft him

Seattle Seahawks tight end George Kittle. That probably doesn't sound very good to San Francisco 49ers fans, but it could have happened. The All-Pro recently spoke with Matt Verderame on the Stacking The Box podcast (h/t to Tzvi Machlin of The Spun) and shared a story from the 2017 NFL Draft when a team tried to move up to grab him. Kittle's agent told him that he felt the former Iowa tight end might be selected as high as the second round, if lucky. However, most likely, they were looking at somewhere between the third and the sixth rounds. The 49ers ended up selecting Kittle in the fifth round, No. 146 overall, but

49ers' Kyle Shanahan explains why he decided on Trey Lance on April 19

On April 19, with 10 days remaining until the 2021 NFL Draft, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, along with general manager John Lynch and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello, traveled to Fargo, North Dakota, to watch quarterback Trey Lance work out. A consensus had not yet been reached on who to draft at No. 3 overall, and there remained rampant media speculation surrounding who it might be. The 49ers were learning towards a player — Lance. They were since trading up on March 26. They were also considering Justin Fields of Ohio State. Mac Jones of Alabama was a safety net, in case plan-altering flaws were found in the other two. Jones was actually the first quarterback prospect who Shanahan studied as soon as the regular season ended. At the

George Kittle: Jimmy Garoppolo's our quarterback, but I trust 49ers brain trust to improve team

By David Bonilla
Apr 28, 2021

With the start of the 2021 NFL Draft just a day away, San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle joined Good Morning Football this morning. He could have a new quarterback as a teammate by Thursday night. On March 26, the Niners traded a haul, including two future first-rounders, to move up to the No. 3 spot. While the team has stated that Jimmy Garoppolo remains in its plans for the upcoming season, there have been reports of growing buzz around the league that San Francisco could look to trade Garoppolo before or during the draft. In Kittle's mind, though, Garoppolo remains his guy. "I mean, Jimmy's our quarterback," Kittle said. "He has been. He's led us to a bunch of wins. We haven't won without him. His record speaks for itself. ...

George Kittle explains why he would love to see the 49ers draft Kyle Pitts

The San Francisco 49ers are selecting a quarterback after trading up nine spots last month to the No. 3 overall pick in tomorrow's NFL Draft. But what if they weren't? George Kittle joined Good Morning Football this morning, and Kay Adams presented the All-Pro tight end with an interesting hypothetical. What if the Niners didn't select a quarterback and drafted former Florida tight end Kyle Pitts instead? How would Kittle feel about that? "Well, see, I like that idea a lot because I think we have four good tight ends on the roster right now," Kittle responded, "but you add Kyle Pitts, all the things that he could do, his versatility, I mean, I'd enjoy running 23 personnel up and down the field. Two backs, three tight ends, spread them out, run the ball
