Jimmy Garoppolo is the biggest loser from the San Francisco 49ers trading up to the No. 3 overall spot last week. The move signals an impending changing of the guard for the team, at least when it comes to the most important position—quarterback.
Multiple reports have stated that the 49ers plan to keep Garoppolo around in 2021. But beyond that, his future is unknown. The team will likely want to move forward with its younger quarterback, even if the competition lights a fire under Garoppolo. It's worth noting that increased production would only increase his trade value.
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area received word of how the 49ers quarterback reacted to the trade news (h/t to Al Sacco).
"I did hear that Kyle reached out to Jimmy and had a talk with him on Friday," Maiocco said during the 49ers Insider Podcast for NBC Sports. "The word is that Jimmy was very disappointed that the 49ers felt that they had to make that move, trading up from No. 12 to No. 3 to get the quarterback of the future."
Per Matt Maiocco on his podcast: Kyle Shanahan reached out to Jimmy Garoppolo, & Jimmy was "very disappointed" #49ers made the trade.
Let's use common sense here. I highly doubt Jimmy will be back or would even want to return at this point. Just a matter of when.

The reaction is understandable, considering the team has repeatedly expressed confidence in Garoppolo since the end of the season. The quarterback likely felt he had the security of at least another season, and he still may. What is clear is that San Francisco has other plans when it comes to its long-term future.
