The New England Patriots reportedly inquired about Jimmy Garoppolo before the start of free agency. The San Francisco 49ers told them that the quarterback was not available at that time. That doesn't mean that Bill Belichick has given up on the idea of a reunion with Garoppolo, his one-time heir apparent to Tom Brady.

The Patriots re-signed Cam Newton after being shut down by the 49ers. Looking to rebound from a seven-win 2020 campaign, they went on a spending spree in free agency. However, many don't feel that Newton will be New England's featured piece on offense.

"No, that is not the sense that I am getting around league circles, that Cam Newton is the guy that the New England Patriots are building this offense around," said ESPN's Dianna Russini on Thursday during a segment on ESPN's Get Up!

Belichick and company may still be pining over Garoppolo, who the 49ers have insisted is the expected starter for the 2021 season. Of course, if a trade opportunity opens up or a quarterback Shanahan loves falls to them in the draft, that could change.

The Patriots are likely hoping for one of those scenarios.

"Just recently, I was talking to somebody in the league who I really trust. He's got good information," Russini continued. "He said, 'Do not take the Jimmy Garoppolo trade off the table.' That is something New England is still sniffing out. Bill doesn't like to put his cards out on the table, so most think if we all know about that, that probably won't happen, but there is definitely a tone in the league that it could still go down."

Garoppolo is 24-9, including the playoffs, as San Francisco's starter. Of course, his durability has come into question. The quarterback missed 10 games last season due to ankle injuries and has missed 23 games over the past three years.

H/t to Patriots Wire for the find.

Pro Football Focus' Trevor Sikkema unveiled his latest mock draft this week and has the San Francisco 49ers addressing the offensive line. Specifically, Sikkema suggests the team seeks a potential replacement for Colton McKivitz at right tackle. In Sikkema's projection, the Niners select former Georgia offensive lineman Amarius Mims with the No. 31 overall pick. The analyst views him as an ideal addition to an offensive front that was untouched in free agency—apart from ensuring continuity among last season's starters. "Mims has one of the craziest builds you will have ever seen — in a good way

Jimmy Garoppolo is back in the NFC West after signing a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback recently explained his decision to join the division rival after a one-season stint with the Las Vegas Raiders. "Obviously good players all around," Garoppolo said, per ESPN. "That's a big part of it. Talking to [head coach] Sean [McVay] on the phone, him just running me through offense and things that he had in mind, it really became appetizing. And I know a lot of the coaches here, so a lot of familiarity in that aspect. And then having played against the Rams a lot in my career, I've seen a lot of good things

The latest defeat was the second unsuccessful Super Bowl trip of the Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch era. The team that dashed the 49ers' championship dreams in February, the Kansas City Chiefs, boast the second-best odds (+600) in the NFL to win Super Bowl 59. Among the NFC West teams, the Los Angeles Rams have the next-best odds after the 49ers, with distant +3500 odds,

Daniel Jeremiah explains why 49ers could still address pass rush in NFL Draft

By David Bonilla
Mar 21

Mock drafts will never please everyone, especially when they solely focus on the first 32 selections without offering perspective on what might come beyond the first round. Regarding the San Francisco 49ers, analyst Daniel Jeremiah's latest mock draft was no different. He projected former Penn State pass rusher Chop Robinson to join the Bay Area team. Why the skepticism from fans? The 49ers' free agency focus has been on revamping their defensive front. After allowing Arik Armstead, Chase Young, and others to depart for other organizations, the team addressed last season's inconsistent play by adding defensive ends Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos, trading for defensive tackle Maliek
