Tony Gonzalez calls Watson-to-49ers ‘a match made in heaven’

Count former NFL tight end Tony Gonzalez among those who are excited at the prospect of the San Francisco 49ers finding a way to acquire quarterback Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans. Gonzalez joined The Herd with Colin Cowherd this week and was asked to identify a team that best fits, should the disgruntled quarterback force a trade.

"Yeah, I love the 49ers," Gonzalez told Colin Cowherd. "I'd love to see him get with Kyle Shanahan. I remember with Matt Ryan a couple of years ago, he was MVP of the league (in 2016) when Kyle got there and they finally got going in that second year of that offense.

"I think Deshaun, his skills, for what Kyle does with the boots, and all that other stuff, they are that quarterback away. A healthy (quarterback) away too. Obviously, they got to the Super Bowl with Garoppolo. Imagine if they added Deshaun Watson to the mix. It would be dynamic. It would be incredible. It would be a match made in heaven."

Watson is just 25 years old and will be entering his fifth year in the NFL. He led the league this past season with 4,823 passing yards coupled with 33 touchdown passes and seven interceptions, but the talent-depleted Texans won just four games. Watson also had 444 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.

"And Deshaun could stay with [Shanahan] for a long time," Gonzalez continued. "It's kind of like Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, where they're going to be together for a long time because Patrick is so young. … But if I'm Deshaun, it would be the 49ers for sure because you can go win a Super Bowl. Next year, they could go win a Super Bowl."

You can watch the entire segment with Gonzalez below. The portion about Watson starts just before the four-minute mark.
