On Monday, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said he didn't expect quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, whose practice window was opened last week, to play in the team's Week 17 finale against the Seattle Seahawks. Two days later, nothing has changed.
"I haven't talked to the doctors about Jimmy, but that means it hasn't changed," Shanahan told reporters before Wednesday's practice. "I mean, I'll rule him out. I'll tell you guys if something changes, but please allow me to change my mind. But don't plan on Jimmy playing this week."
Garoppolo has not played since suffering a high-ankle sprain during Week 8 and being placed on injured reserve on November 5.
The 49ers could get another player off of injured reserve in time for Sunday's game, though. Shanahan said there is a chance that offensive lineman Tom Compton is ready to play this weekend. The team opened his practice window before Wednesday's practice.
San Francisco will have until Saturday to decide whether Compton should be activated off of injured reserve. He landed there on December 12 due to a concussion suffered during Week 12.
"Yes, there is a chance Tom plays because he's been let out of the protocol," Shanahan said. "So, hopefully, that will work out, especially being low on O-linemen too. I would love to get Tom back."
