It's official. The Week 17 matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks won't be played at Levi's Stadium.
Santa Clara County has extended its collegiate and professional contact sports ban through at least January 8. The initial three-week restrictions were set to expire on December 21, but that changed because Bay Area ICUs are dangerously close to capacity due to the surge in COVID-19 cases. As of Thursday, ICU capacity was at about 13 percent.
With the holidays approaching, the fear is that the worst is yet to come. A recent health order strongly discourages non-essential travel between Bay Area counties and San Francisco is requiring any incoming travelers to quarantine for 10 days.
The 49ers have played their last two "home games" at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, and have been practicing on fields neighboring the complex. The team will travel to Arlington, Texas this weekend to play the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium before returning to State Farm Stadium as the road team against the Arizona Cardinals.
The 49ers had hoped to return to Levi's Stadium for their January 3 season finale against the Seahawks, but that will not be possible.
