Rams coach Sean McVay sees a bright future for ‘disruptive’ 49ers rookie Javon Kinlaw

Nov 25, 2020 at 5:18 PM--

San Francisco 49ers rookie defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw has shown a lot of potential in his first NFL season. The numbers haven't been there, but the first-round pick was initially seen as a player who might take some time to develop.

Kinlaw has just 1.5 sacks to go with his 22 tackles, and four quarterback hits through 10 game appearances this season.

The 49ers are preparing to face the Los Angeles Rams this weekend, and Rams head coach Sean McVay can certainly see Kinlaw's potential.

"I think he's got a bright future," McVay told 49ers reporters via a conference call on Wednesday. "He's definitely been playing more consistently, snap in and snap out. He flashes. You see the ability.

"But I think understanding the techniques, the fundamentals that they want to play with snap in and snap out is something that you're starting to see, and he's a disruptive player. He's got great twitch. He's got great strength at the point of attack.

"You can see why he's a first-rounder and why he's going to be a great player in this league for a long time if he continues to grow and do what he's done his rookie year."

It doesn't sound like the 49ers have much to worry about when it comes to the knee problems that sidelined rookie defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw for the final two games of the 2020 regular season, based on comments from team general manager John Lynch on Monday. Kinlaw sustained the injury during the 49ers' 41-33 Week 15 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Lynch was asked during his year-end press conference if Kinlaw's injury was related at all to knee tendinitis that flared up during the predraft process in the early part of 2020. The general manager responded by saying that Kinlaw's latest knee problem was simply a result of a hard bump he took to his knee when chasing down Cowboys quarterback Andy Dalton. "I guess when you say tendinitis, tendinitis is just some

Jan 10, 2021

The San Francisco 49ers are excited about defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw's potential. While the rookie defender recorded just 1.5 sacks during his first NFL season, he showed flashes of being a powerful playmaker who could develop into an elite talent along the interior of the defensive line. "I think Kinlaw is going to be a dominant force in this league," John Lynch told Tim Kawakami of The Athletic on The TK Show podcast. "I should say, 'is going to become,' because he's not there yet. He's shown flashes." Lynch knows a thing or two about impressive defensive-line play. He played behind a Hall of Famer in Warren Sapp. In fact, watching his former teammate cause
