49ers injury news: Dee Ford sighting (on a side field) during Friday practice

Oct 23, 2020 at 12:50 PM--

There's been a Dee Ford sighting at the San Francisco 49ers practice facility. Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee spotted the veteran pass rusher pushing a sled on a side field at the start of Friday's practice. As noted by the beat writer, Ford has not played since Week 1.

Ford is dealing with a back injury. Unfortunately, not much else is known about the severity of the injury, as the 49ers have opted not to disclose further information. We know the team doesn't expect Ford to return until after the team's Week 11 bye. San Francisco placed the defender on injured reserve on October 3.

"I mean, he's gotten the work he's needed," head coach Kyle Shanahan said of Ford this week. "He got the shots he's needed. He's rested it. Now, he's just starting to get back into some things. But still ways away on that."

Ford is in his second season with the 49ers. San Francisco acquired the defender last offseason in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Ford recorded three tackles in his one game appearance this season.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters via Zoom on Tuesday and provided several updates on players. First, the injury updates. Shanahan was holding out hope that defensive end Dee Ford would return from his back injury this season. The coach didn't sound too optimistic of that on Tuesday when asked if Ford might return. "It's not looking like it," Shanahan said. "I mean, I'm not going to say no for sure. We're holding out hope but it's not looking like it." The same is the case for center Weston Richburg and defensive end Ronald Blair. "I don't (expect them to return this season)," Shanahan said. "Both of them had really bad setbacks with the stuff that happened in their surgeries. I know both of them are still

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Jamar Taylor went down near the end of the second quarter of the team's Week 12 road matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. He had to be carted off the field and to the locker room after appearing to suffer a left knee injury. Taylor appeared to be in significant pain as he was helped onto the cart. The injury came on a hit from Rams running back Malcolm Brown. Taylor has been playing at the slot cornerback position during K'Waun Williams' absence. Emmanuel Moseley replaced him. Taylor, an eight-year veteran, is in his first season with San Francisco. He entered the game with 19 tackles, two tackles for a loss, a sack, two quarterback hits, two interceptions, and three passes defensed this season. Taylor is

Kyle Shanahan attempts to explain Arik Armstead's drop in production

By David Bonilla
Nov 19, 2020

Some subscribe to the idea that you shouldn't hand a big payday to a player whose outlier season falls during a contract year. Defensive lineman Arik Armstead's career-best season came last year when he led the San Francisco 49ers with 10 sacks. The production came during his fifth-year option, and the 49ers rewarded the defender this offseason with a five-year, $85 million deal. Armstead had a lot of help along the defensive line last season. He had rookie phenom Nick Bosa and veteran Dee Ford (at times) causing havoc on the edges. He had DeForest Buckner plugging up the middle. It truly was one of the best defensive lines the Niner Faithful had seen in a long while. And
