49ers hope to keep Kwon Alexander off injured reserve; Kyle Shanahan provides Richard Sherman update

Oct 16, 2020 at 2:08 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers are hoping to get linebacker Kwon Alexander back this season. How soon that will happen remains unclear, but head coach Kyle Shanahan informed reporters on Friday that the team isn't talking injured reserve just yet.

"We don't think [injured reserve is a possibility] right now," Shanahan said. "I never like to say 'minor high-ankle sprain' because high-ankle sprains are always a big issue, but it wasn't your typical one where they for sure go on IR. That's why we haven't put him on that yet, and we're hoping to keep him off."

Shanahan also provided an update on Richard Sherman, who has been sidelined with a calf injury since Week 1. The 49ers had hoped to get him back this past weekend, but the cornerback had a setback last week.

Shanahan had informed reporters that the team was giving Sherman shots to reduce the inflammation and increase his chances of returning soon.

"Sherm got the injections and stuff," Shanahan said. "I know now is a matter of time resting it, and you don't go out and see if they've worked yet. You let the injections do their course, and you see how it is, whether it's next week or the week after."

Richard Sherman 'ecstatic' about idea of returning to 49ers

By David Bonilla

Richard Sherman seemingly spent the last month of the 2020 season with one foot out the door of the San Francisco 49ers building. He knew he was not returning, mostly due to the team's salary-cap situation, and would hit free agency. Sherman remains unsigned and recently said he hasn't ruled out a return to the Bay Area team. Although, he didn't expect any movement in the free-agent cornerback market until after the draft. With the 2021 NFL Draft in the books, Sherman's perspective has changed a bit. He sounds like he would gladly welcome a return to the 49ers, the team with which he spent the last three seasons. "There's always a chance it could end up

Richard Sherman weighs in on 49ers having Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance

One of the many reasons the San Francisco 49ers were appealing to Richard Sherman when the veteran cornerback signed with the team in 2018 was Jimmy Garoppolo. The quarterback was coming off an impressive five-game run after being traded from the New England Patriots, and the 49ers had just re-signed him to a long-term deal. It looked like the team had solidified its quarterback position. Three years later, Garoppolo's eventual replacement is on the roster. Recent injury-plagued seasons forced San Francisco to plan for the future — post-Garoppolo. Last week, the team drafted Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick. Garoppolo remains on the roster and is part of the 49ers' plans for the upcoming season. He will be the team's starting quarterback, allowing

On Wednesday, Richard Sherman told ESPN's Max Kellerman and Molly Qerim Rose that returning to the San Francisco 49ers remains a possibility. He also mentioned the Seattle Seahawks as a potential option. "There's always a chance it could end up working back in the Bay, and I head back that way," Sherman said on ESPN's First Take. "That's another place I'm really comfortable going. Obviously, I know the staff, know the team well. Just spent time there and would be ecstatic if something happened there." Sherman added that he doesn't believe anything is imminent, and a signing may not even happen until after the regular season begins, if at

Pauline: Kyle Shanahan was 'pretty upset' Andy Dalton got away, 49ers wanted to trade Garoppolo

The San Francisco 49ers were reportedly interested in signing Andy Dalton this offseason. The former Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys quarterback ended up signing a one-year, $10 million deal with the Chicago Bears, where he will help mentor rookie Justin Fields. That was too pricey for the 49ers, apparently, According to analyst Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network, head coach Kyle Shanahan really wanted to add Dalton and wasn't happy when the veteran quarterback slipped through the 49ers' fingertips. "They wanted to sign Andy Dalton in free agency as their veteran quarterback and then trade (Jimmy) Garoppolo and draft Lance,"
