Jimmy Garoppolo was 7-of-17 for 77 yards and two interceptions during the first half against the Miami Dolphins. The San Francisco 49ers are trying to earn their first home win of the season but trail 30-7, and it looks like Garoppolo is done for the day.

The 49ers are going with C.J. Beathard for the remainder of the game. This is his second consecutive week coming off the bench to replace a starting quarterback. Beathard was 14-of-19 for 138 yards last week against the Philadelphia Eagles after replacing Nick Mullens.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan informed field reporter Lindsay Czarniak that the decision was made to protect Garoppolo, who has been sacked three times in the game. Garoppolo missed the last two games after suffering a high-ankle sprain during Week 2 against the New York Jets.

Beathard is in his fourth NFL season. The 49ers made him a third-round pick in 2017 out of Iowa, where he was teammates with tight end George Kittle. Beathard and Garoppolo are the only two active quarterbacks today. Mullens, who has been demoted to San Francisco's No. 3 quarterback, was among the team's inactives.
